Do the North

We begin our journey in the inner archipelago, surrounded by large forested islands and a cultural landscape that invokes the feeling of travelling back in time. Traditional old wooden houses are dotted along the bay. After a short paddle we take a lunch break by a pretty sea meadow, one of Saint Anna's most unique habitats, where salt-resistant plants thrive along the edge of the sea. We forage edible greens as well as rose hips, hawthorne and barberries, wild remains from a time when the island was inhabited. We continue our paddle through the inner archipelago. By now, we're completely submerged in the area, with a maze of islands stretching out in all directions. In the late afternoon we arrive to our camp for the night, where our culinary guide is waiting, already busy preparing for an evening and morning full of wild cooking. We all help cook a delicious meal for the evening as well as prepare items for upcoming days. We forage for sorrel, orpine, chives and juniper berries.

As we peek through the opening of our tents, we are hopefully met by a mirror-calm sea with the blue sky reflected in the water in the most gorgeous of ways. A morning dip is a refreshing way to start the day. After breakfast, we set off for our paddle exploration of the day. We paddle through stunning bird sanctuaries, clusters of little islands with abundant bird life. Very likely we'll see Sea Eagles gliding high up in the sky, and if lucky we may spot seals. We're in the middle part of the archipelago now, where the islands are smaller and more plentiful. We aim to reach our next camp in the early afternoon, a completely different habitat than the pine trees and moss of our last island. Here we are surrounded by deciduous forest with open glades marked by grazing animals. It's a great landscape for foraging mushrooms and berries. Wild herbs grow on the meadows, and we pick oregano and ground-ivy to use for dinner.

If the weather allows, we'll head to the outer archipelago. It's a very different landscape than the one we left behind - hundreds of tiny barren islands with sparse wind-pined trees and a unique flora of salt-resistant plants. The blue horizon is our backdrop and the solitude out here is amazing. After quite a strenuous paddle we make our way back to our camp by late afternoon. The local fisherman will arrive with his catch of the day and we'll make a proper feast for our last night in the archipelago. We invite the rest of the Do the North crew to join!

BREAKFAST

Our last morning of waking up in our tranquil island wonderland. We pack up our camp and fill our bellies with a hardy breakfast. We paddle towards a different site on the mainland than where we started, passing though new bird sanctuaries as we near the end of our fantastic exploration. A narrow canal takes us from the wilderness maze, then all of a sudden civilisation appears in a bay full of little cabins and old houses. You will leave Saint Anna full of inspiration to take your wilderness cooking to another level, just about anything is possible!

This was such a fun experience, perfect combination of kayaking and amazing food! We were so lucky with the weather for the most part. On the days we paddled we have beautiful skies and almost no wind. Rob our kayaking guide/chef was super helpful with everything (especially for me since I didn’t pack warm enough gear). Our fearless chef Helena taught us and also prepared ridiculous meals that were impressive in a kitchen, let alone over a fire fit. We had a great combination of people and I would highly recommend this experience to anyone that enjoys food and like a little kayaking. It was very helpful to have a base camp and just go out to expeditions around the archipelago

The Culinary Experience trip was everything I'd hoped it would be: lovely paddling in the archipelago, some interesting learning about foraging for edible plants on the islands, and *spectacular* food. Do the North made the logistics really simple, and Rob and Helena took excellent care of our group throughout the trip, setting a laid-back vibe while engaging us in taking on the work required to set up camp and make fantastic meals for our group. Every meal was absolutely incredible. A trip worth travelling from Canada for!

The most amazing trip for Foodies especially if you like foraging and a bit of wild adventure. Can’t say more as don’t want too many people to know about it! Thanks to Rob who was an amazing guide and whittling tutor and Helena whose culinary expertise and picture perfect camp kitchen will be an abiding memory.

I absolutely loved this holiday, it was just the perfect blend of exploring, activity, learning, unwinding and meeting new people. Helena and Thomas were incredibly welcoming and relaxed, and we had a fabulous group too. Everyone pitched in to help wherever we could and that made it such an enjoyable experience. Being so immersed in nature was great, and it was really fun to learn some great outdoor cooking skills and try some new ingredients. Highly recommend!!

My husband and I and our 2 adult daughters had a fabulous time. We travelled easily to Norrköping by train from Stockholm and were picked up at the train station by Do the North. Tomas, our kayaking guide, got us oriented to the equipment and we were off. On arrival at our base camp island, I was impressed by the table they had made for us of birch boughs, and the first class new tent, pads etc. Helena, our chef, put us to work- and we made some jam, and pickles of plants we had harvested. Helena is so talented and we learned so much about Swedish cuisine over the next several days, amplified by the foraging. I unfortunately hurt my wrist during the trip( my own fault in a slip and fall) and Tomas fashioned a splint out of birch that worked very well. Then at the end they arranged for a water taxi to pick me up while everyone else kayaked back. The beauty and tranquility of the archipelago is stunning and despite my personal bad luck this was one of the best travel experiences I have ever had.

We had a wonderful time under the guidance of Thomas, our wilderness guide, and the care of Helena, our chef. The camping on an uninhabited island was delightful in nice tents on comfortable mattresses. The kayaking was beautiful and the foraging great fun. We had a wonderful time cooking our meals together. The entire trip was well-thought out and prepared by the team, and our every wish was looked after. The archipelago is stunningly beautiful. Our group was great.

Would recommend this trip. A lot of thought and love was put into it, and it was well noticeable. The kayaking was enjoyable, and our guide explained everything clearly. The saint archipelago is absolutely stunning, so had a great time setting up camp on the different islands. The gear we were provided with was of absolutely top notch quality. And last but not least, the food was awesome! Helena is an amazing cook, she whipped up so many delicious dishes on the campfire, even when it was raining for 36 hours straight. I really enjoyed that so many things were home made or locally sourced. Very great experience.
