  • Great wetlands tour

This was a nice break from cathedrals and history and museums on our Spain trip. The wetlands are extensive, and we saw lots of birds (flamingos, spoonbills, even an eagle). Our guide Jose was very informative and shared lots of pictures with us. Unfortunately we did not see an Iberian lynx. If you can, sit up front or in the middle seats, as it was a little hard to hear in the back of the van. Note: the water level, and therefore the wildlife, in the wetlands varies considerably as the seasons change. We were there while things were wet and lush and green, it dries out late i the year - plan accordingly.

  • The trip to Doñana...

The trip to Doñana National Park was not quite how I imagined it to be. We saw plenty of deer, four to be exact, and a wild boar, the only problem being that they were all dead. Apparently they had drowned during last week's flooding and we could marvel at their bloated corpses gently rocking in the waves by the fenced roadside. We did see several flocks of live flamingos and nesting storks (also alive), and our driver even managed to catch a Montpellier snake. The drive through the park was rather uncomfortable due to the bad condition of the roads. My sense of discomfort was aggravated by a lack of airconditioning. The driver/tour guide was very knowledgeable but did not seem too keen on interacting with us. Now I don't mind if a tour guide prefers to keep to himself, but coupled with a lack of mammals and a lacklustre landscape I was repeatedly asking myself what had possessed me to book this tour. Don't get me started on El Rocio. This place is a fever dream of a Spanish town, dusty and full of religious fanatics. Bird afficionados will enjoy this tour though.

Our tour guide Miguel was fantastic. He worked so hard to find interesting things for us to see despite the horrendous weather and inability (due to flooding) to get to all the places that would have provided the most interesting viewing of wildlife. So 5 stars for that part. However, I felt that Naturanda should have canceled the tour that day because they already knew of the road closures and quite frankly, in hindsight it seemed almost dangerous to go out there where we did. There was dangerous flooding throughout the area. We did safely get back to Seville but it was an extra long day without seeing much of anything.

Called off because or rain. They offered Gibraltar instead. Poured down in Gibraltar... not their fault!

Wonderful trip. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made this trip extra special. I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to learn more about nature and Andalusia.
