Conveying how good this experience was is challenging. It will remain a highlight in our travel experiences. Aki san from Adventure Tourism Himeji had been initially scheduled to be our guide but when an unexpected situation arose, he quickly arranged for his colleagues to expertly guide us through our tour of Himeji castle in addition to an optional traditional crafts experience. Himeji castle is an obvious jewel but the insights provided by Rie san added to our enjoyment of the tour. We were taken expertly into the structure and given information on what it took to build such a beautiful masterpiece of castle architecture. It is obvious why it is a UNESCO site. Our driver Ken san was very professional and cheerful and navigated us to our lunch spot as well as to true highlights of our travel history (the introduction to local craftspeople). We first met Sungawa san who provided an impressive description of Buddhist float-making and an introduction to Japanese lacquer crafts in general. We were blown away by the information as well as how humble he was in describing what is a true art. Not to mention his obvious mastery of it. We hope to see his finished float on a future trip! After this introduction into the local expertise, we went on to meet the charming Harada family. Words can't adequately express our gratitude for having met them. We were welcomed into their home/studio and watched true masters (metal hammering, gold leaf application). Seeing the craftsman (apologies for not catching the name) work on the metalwork was very humbling. His commitment to his craft is truly admirable and I came out with an intense respect for it. Harada san was even kind enough to help apply some gold leaf to a very special keepsake. We travel to be able to meet people like the Haradas. Our introduction to them will remain a highlight of our trip to Japan. Thank you for this.
