Fukuoka Castle Remains
The castle was once a flourishing place during the Edo period (early 1600) but today, it is mainly the ruins of stone walls, moat and gates. However, the panoramic view of Fukuoka city from Fukusaki Hill is pretty amazing. The best time to visit in order to admire the full beauty of the castle ruins is during the Sakura Festival.
Sumiyoshi Shrine
One of the oldest such sites on Kyushu, the Sumiyoshi-jinja Shrine is, like its counterpart in Osaka, dedicated to the protective divinities of seafarers, the last of a series of such shrines sailors would visit before heading out to sea. Particularly impressive is the Main Hall, rebuilt in its current classical style in 1623, along with a number of important national treasures, most notably an ancient sword and a copper axe, along with old manuscripts and documents dating back to the Middle Ages. From the shrine, which is surrounded by a large grove of Japanese cedars and camphor trees, are fine views over the River Naka. Be sure to allow plenty of time to also explore the adjacent Sumiyoshi Park.

Miyoko was the most diligent guide that we have worked with during our visit to Japan. She was in touch with us very early to understand our preferences and was flexible in her approach. We preferred cultural sites rather than markets and she made excellent use of our brief time in town since we were visiting on a cruise ship. Highly recommended.

Two of us from an NCL cruise had a day sightseeing in Fukuoka with Sasuke. The highlight for us was the lying down Buddha which is quite away from the port and meant we got to ride a train and saw some of the lovely countryside. We also got to try delicious Ramen which turned out to be the best Ramen we experienced during our time in Japan. We enjoyed Sasuke’s company and her extensive knowledge. She met us promptly off the ship and returned us on time.

We had a great time on our tour. Our guide Rikako was wonderful and knowledgeable. She met us at the cruise terminal and escorted us the whole time. We went through Dazaifu and saw the shrine as well as the cultural museum. Tips: she showed us a very cool Starbucks. Starbucks is not something I usually get excited by but this one was very unique architecturally. She also took us to a tucked away shrine dedicated to cartoons and characters where we got some pictures for the kids. She took us to a few other special places including a great little hole in the wall place for Ramen. Unfortunately we decided to cut our tour short as it was very rainy. Would definitely book with Rikako again!

2 excursions with nice explanation of what was seen ... first Nanzoin temple with the big Buddha stature ...then to Dazaifu which was quite touristy

Fantastic few hours of "rapid" tour across Fukuoka - there's no way I would be able to see that much by myself. Thank you!

Chizuko, our guide, was phenomenal. We communicated back-and-forth prior to our arrival in Japan. We had done some research and had a general idea of what we would like to see, do and eat. Chizuko met us at our hotel and then effortlessly guided us on the subway and JR trains to our various destinations across the city, including a restaurant selling local delicacies that we would never have found. It coincided with the festival so her carefully crafted itinerary changed a bit, as we were dancing and interacting with the various performing groups along the way. Her English was perfect and, whilst she was very professional, she was also extremely pleasant and easy to talk to. We had considered doing it on our own with a guide book but so glad we took the full day tour. Highly recommended.
