What To Expect

Plaza Berlin

This plaza was developed together with the German embassy in Guatemala and the Municipality of Guatemala. It has a fairly large space that allows you to observe a panoramic landscape of the south of Guatemala City as well as remains of the historic Berlin wall that had its fall in 1989.

Inside the cathedral you can see the paintings of Pedro Ramírez, colonial images, the replica of the Black Christ of Esquipulas, the Virgin of Socorro and the High Altar.

I had to reach out to Viator to contact the company because the tour company never responded to any of my messages about confirmation or pick-up times. Finally, I was told to be in the lobby between 8:50–9:00am for my driver, Victoria, but she didn’t arrive until 10:00am. She texted at 8:54 saying she was delayed in traffic and followed up with another call about running even more behind due to car issues. The majority of the tour involved driving around while landmarks were pointed out—often while she was texting and driving, which was uncomfortable. The itinerary only listed three official stops, and although she did point out additional locations and we got out four times for photos, it still felt limited for the price. Victoria spoke English and was very knowledgeable about the city, but overall the tour didn’t feel like a good value. For a 5-hour tour, I expected more activity and exploration; I barely even reached 10k steps. By 3:30pm, we were essentially finished, and our final stop at Plaza Cayalá felt more like filler than an intentional part of the tour. Unless you plan on high-end shopping, there isn’t much reason to go, and I wish that had been discussed beforehand. A decent tour, but not one I would recommend at this price point.
