Important Note regarding Maligne Canyon Waterfalls: Due to damage caused by last summer’s wildfire, access to Maligne Canyon is currently closed by Parks Canada for infrastructure repairs to ensure visitor safety. If these repairs are not completed prior to your selected tour date, the short walk to view waterfalls in Maligne Canyon will not be possible. In this case, the tour will proceed with a slightly altered itinerary, offering alternative stops to showcase the area’s unique beauty. This includes a visit to Maligne Lookout, where you can view the dramatically changed landscape from a high vantage point, and additional time at Medicine Lake, featuring a short walk along the shore for stunning perspectives of the lake surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. Please rest assured that the tour length and price remain unchanged, and the overall experience will still provide incredible opportunities to explore and learn about the Maligne Valley’s natural wonders.

What To Expect

This journey takes us through 45 kilometers of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in the Canadian Rockies. The Maligne Valley is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, and it has geological features unique in the world. Our journey takes us searching for abundant wildlife while explaining the history and natural wonders to be explored. A 30-minute stop at Maligne Canyon allows us time to explore the two bridges, offering fantastic views of the cascading waterfall and continuing erosion of the ancient limestone. As we continue into the Valley, we climb into the sub-alpine forests and view the expanding ranges of limestone rising out or Medicine Lake. A stop is made to photograph this natural wonder, and your guide traces its history with you. From Medicine Lake, we continue up through a forest that is prime habitat for moose and bears. Sightings are common but not guaranteed as we are trying to view these animals in their natural habitat. At world-famous Maligne Lake, you are led on a 2 to 3km interpretive nature walk. You take in beautiful lakeshore vistas before following the easy-grade trail loop back into the forested surrounds.

  • Wonderful tour of Athabaska Falls and Jasper’s wildlife

I had an excellent time on this tour. We were able to go into a meadow with our guide to see a moose within a safe distance. We never saw any grizzlies in the other meadow when the 3 of us were hiking while the rest of the group took the boat across maligne lake. It was cool in October so we had lunch on the lake and got hot drinks for the hike. We also got to see the breathtaking Athabaska Falls.

The tour was very informative & adventurous. We had a perfect day. Got to see the baby bald eagles at Medicine Lake. Learning why it is called Medicine Lake was interesting. The hike along Maligne Lake was fun and learning about why the lake is the colour that it is was interesting aswell. Seeing the destruction from the wildfires in 2024 upclose was eye opening. Would encourage everyone to go on one of the tours to learn about the history of the area rather than just hike it on your own. Makes a big difference understanding the environment to better respect how it has come to be. On the way back down got to see, elk & a black bear from the bus. Exciting.

We had a great experience with our guide Sam ( from Canada). He is very knowledgeable about different topics. He explained everything clearly and showed us many animals even in the rain.

Our driver and guide Josh was fantastic. He was very friendly and had a great sense of humour. His knowledge of wildlife, trees and fires was excellent. We learnt a lot on the tour. Lake Maligne is beautiful. It was a rainy day but it was still worth the visit. We also managed to spot some bald eagles, Ospreys and elks. We didn’t see any bears or moose. We had a great time and would definitely recommend this tour.
