At Village Cooking Class Kandy, we offer a unique opportunity to learn traditional Sri Lankan cooking in a village setting. The experience begins with a visit to a local market, where you’ll learn how to select fresh vegetables and ingredients essential to Sri Lankan cuisine. Back at the village, you’ll be guided through the preparation and cooking of authentic dishes, giving you hands-on experience in crafting a perfect Sri Lankan meal.
You are welcome to join as an individual, a couple, or a group. It offers a wonderful opportunity. Our traditional cooking class is based in Kandy, and we accommodate groups of all sizes, from individuals to groups of up to 15 people.
By the end, you'll have the chance to prepare a complete traditional meal. Finally, you'll enjoy tasting the delicious food. In addition, this experience includes a brief visit to a nearby village, providing you with a unique insight into local life.

At Village Cooking Class Kandy, we offer a unique opportunity to learn traditional Sri Lankan cooking in a village setting. The experience begins with a visit to a local market, where you’ll learn how to select fresh vegetables and ingredients essential to Sri Lankan cuisine. We provide pickup from a designated point for the market visit, ensuring a seamless experience. Back at the village, you’ll be guided through the preparation and cooking of authentic dishes, giving you hands-on experience in crafting a perfect Sri Lankan meal.In addition, this experience includes a brief visit to a nearby village, providing you with a unique insight into local life. Market Visit - We offer a market visit as part of our activity. During the visit, we guide you through the process of selecting five vegetables from a wide variety available in the market. You will also have the option to choose either chicken or fish. In addition, we provide detailed explanations about the spices and other ingredients at the market. The experience began with a visit to a vibrant local market, where we learned how to select fresh vegetables and discover the essential spices that make Sri Lankan cuisine so special. Back in the peaceful village setting, we were guided step by step through the preparation of several traditional dishes. The hands-on approach made it both fun and educational, and we appreciated learning the techniques behind each recipe. The hosts were warm, patient, and passionate about sharing their culture. Cooking together in such a relaxed rural atmosphere made the experience feel personal and meaningful. At the end, we enjoyed the delicious meal we had prepared ourselves — a full traditional Sri Lankan feast bursting with flavor. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kandy who wants a genuine cultural and culinary experience!

5.00What a wonderful experience that was! We met in the market and were talked through all the exotic vegetables as we bought the ingredients we needed and felt part of the scene rather than just tourists. Driven to Shyma’s house for the cooking class and made to feel so welcome. There were 2 couples which made the class really involved with everyone tasting and chopping as we helped Shyma create an incredible array of DELICIOUS dishes which we then enjoyed for lunch. Lucky to be driven back as the other couple had a car. Am sure transport could be arranged. A really fun and interesting way to appreciate Sri Lankan cooking. We loved it, thank you 🙏

5.00What an incredible experience! Very knowledgeable taking you around the market explaining all the different fruit and veg. When you the get to the kitchen it’s very hands on while they explain recipes in detail and they send you all the recipes afterwards so you can try at home. Food was incredible and you get to try 8 different dishes!

5.00What an amazing evening.... could not fault it. Flawless! Authentic village dwelling ... so lean. We were taught slowly and allowed to cook the food with our host as we went along. Everything beautifully explained and demonstrated. At the end the meal was the best! Would love to eat like that every day. Please go and have such a fabulous time to remember.

5.00What a wonderful experience First we went to the market in Kandy to get all ingredients specially for my preference Arrived at the cooking class I saw this lovely authentic place ,like the Srilankian do there cooking Really inviting! We made all sorts of dishes ,honestly one of the best Srilankian food I have had during my stay in Sri Lanka It was so much fun , the host explained everything perfectly, in a very easy way I learned in addition, how to make coconut cream and milk in the traditional way The both ladies are so sweet Though the place is a bit outside of candy It is absolutely worth going there Transportation is no problem at all Either you will be picked up at your place or at the market For the way back, they will call a Tuctuc for you You are in very best hands If I come back I will definitely do a cooking class with them again 💖 Thanks so much for this unique experience

5.00This was definitely the best experience in kandy! Shyama showed us so many sri lankan recipes after her husband went to the market to buy herbs and vegetables with us. We're both vegetarian and that was no issue. The atmosphere is amazing and they explained so much about the ingredients. If you go there you need to make the Brinjol moju (with aubergine), because it was so amazing!

5.00Really great interactive demo of 8 dishes. The market visit also very informative where the host bought the food we would later help cook. Can’t recommend this highly enough if you love cooking and want to learn more about Sri Lankan cuisine.

4.00Took us to the market in Kandy first which was a great experience and we learned about many different vegetables they have in Sri Lanka. We then had the cooking class at their kitchen a short drive away - we cooked several different curries and they got us involved in each stage of the cooking. All the food was delicious and there was plenty of it! Only potential downside is having to organise transport back to hotels - the tuk tuk drivers can be difficult to get and ours got lost on the way out.

5.00Loved this cooking experience! It was the highlight of our time in Kandy. We started with a guided visit to the local markets where we learned about different fruits, vegetables, and spices, and even got to taste some along the way. After that, we were driven back to a traditional home kitchen where we cooked nine different curry dishes from scratch. We learned how to make fresh coconut milk and coconut cream, along with many other authentic cooking techniques that you wouldn’t normally get to see. The hosts were incredibly warm and welcoming, and it truly felt like being invited into someone’s home rather than attending a class. I highly recommend this experience to anyone wanting a genuine taste of Sri Lankan food and culture — it was educational, hands-on, and absolutely delicious.
