Shyama was an absolute delight to deal with from booking to dropping us back into Kandy. Her home and her kitchen are wonderful, they are right on the slopes out of Kandy, with coconut trees all around, you feel right in the heart of the community. You choose 4 vegetables to make 4 of the curries, then we also did a chicken curry, an egg curry, rice, coconut sambal and sweet pancakes for dessert. You meet in Kandy market to choose the produce and then you go by Tuktuk to her house where you start cooking. She uses traditional pots and pans and a wooden stove. Once the curries are all prepared, you dine on your produce and then return to Kandy. Since the floods, classes are much quieter, so please if you’re in Kandy, please book this experience. The money goes straight to an amazing resourceful lady & her family.

An unforgettable and truly authentic experience in Kandy. From the very beginning, our host was incredibly kind and welcoming. She guided us through the local market, explaining every ingredient in detail and letting us choose what we wanted to cook, which made the experience feel even more genuine and immersive. After the market visit, we went to her home, where we were warmly welcomed and lovingly introduced to the traditional recipes of Sri Lankan cuisine. She patiently explained each step, shared stories about the culture behind the dishes, and made us feel completely at home. This cooking class was not just about food, but about culture, hospitality and connection. A truly special experience that we would highly recommend to anyone visiting Kandy and wanting to discover the real Sri Lanka through its flavors.

Attended this cooking class during our stay in Kandy and loved it. The experience was fun, authentic, and hands-on, starting with a visit to the local market before cooking our chosen dishes in a traditional village kitchen. Our host was warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable, explaining each ingredient and its role in Sri Lankan cuisine. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Kandy — a memorable experience!

It was a very special cooking class, starting with a visit to the market and buying what we were going to prepare. We had lots of interesting tips as we went around the market stands, making it a very lively event. But then, the cooking class was phenomenal, ending up making 7 different dishes and learning other tricks (e.g., how to crack a coconut, how to make coco milk, etc.). Needless to say that the dinner with our prepared dishes was fantastic and ended up making new acquaintances with the rest of the group. Definitely, not to miss when visiting Kandy.

We were picked up from our hotel and taken to the Kandy market, where we were introduced to a variety of local spices and vegetables, which we purchased for the cooking class. We then continued to the village, where we were welcomed with tea before beginning the lesson. With the guidance of our instructors, we prepared rice, six different curries, and fried papadam. Every dish was delicious and not too spicy. We also learned how to make two different types of coconut milk, and the instructors even prepared pancakes for dessert. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the cooking class and found it to be excellent value for the price.

Wow, this didn’t feel like a tourist trap at all. Worth every penny. We were involved in the buying process, cooking process… and eating process! Thanks again!

This was the highlight of our visit. A truly wonderful experience – learnt so much about Sri Lankan cooking. The main reason for this was Shyama - she is a wonderful, warm, clever, and organized chef and teacher, who helped guide us through the entire process. The atmosphere and the location were lovely. And, we got to taste the delicious dishes which we had prepared ourselves. All the ingredients were fresh and organic. Super strongly recommend this for anyone visiting Sri Lanka.

Excellent experience, they were very accommodating of our group of eight. Informative tour round the market and cooking in a lovely family run environment. They went out of their way to involve everyone equally in the cooking process and the food was the most delicious we have had in Sri Lanka!

A group of 8 of us did the evening cooking class with market tour. Shyama and her family are so welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable of the local area and Sri Lankan cooking. The cooking class was really fun, interactive and the food we made was delicious. We ate the food we made in family style after the class. We would highly recommend if you are looking for an authentic and fun activity! Thanks Shyama for an amazing experience!!
