What To Expect
Ella Train Journey is considered as one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. Due to the repair works of train track, now train starts from the Ambewela station. Which is located close to Nuwaraeliya. It creates very beautifully, green scenery from the moment you start the journey till you reach the end. The train travels among the hill areas/mountains, tea estates, over the rivers & waterfalls, etc. Train is operating daily and what you receive is the ticket from Ambewela to Ella with reserved seats (Seat number is printed on the ticket) Tickets will be allocated from 2nd or 3rd class reserved coaches depending on the availability. There is no much difference between the two classes as both comes with openable windows where you can enjoy the best of the scenic journey. Only the passengers with reserved seats are allowed to travel in this train and no standing passengers. Therefore train is not getting crowded as the ordinary coaches with unreserved seats.

Great Service but ask again beforehand which class was booked!

4.00Have travelled by train in October, super nice experience! The Service was great, BE organized everything great and kept in touch with us. However, we were then accommodated in the 1st class, which we did not want. The description said 2. or 3. Great. In the end it was still really great and we were able to sit down at the open door :)
A bad experience buying...

1.00A bad experience buying tickets. The agency handling the file in Sri Lanka initially told me that we had tickets booked for a train on August 10 at 12:15 p.m. before notifying me the day before that we had to change the schedule to a 2:00 p.m. train. We were supposed to receive the tickets the same day before 7:30 a.m., but we were only able to collect them around 12:00 p.m. And finally, the tickets were invalid because the agency had not written our passport numbers on the tickets. Nothing was right about this.

4.00Tickets were arranged as promised. However, it was a little stressful not being guaranteed which class of service we would get and whether we would be able to sit together. Communication was a little challenging at times. However, in the end, it all worked out and we had a really good time.

1.00Reserved tickets one month in advance. These would be delivered to our hotel on the day of departure. Received nothing that morning. After contacting us several times our booking was cancelled. Because this was so short before departure we were unable to buy new tickets.

4.00When hiring the tickets, a Kandy-based Travel Enterprise was contacted by WhatsApp. We arrange delivery on the day of departure of the train journey at the hotel at seven in the morning. The day before we were informed about a new regulation by the Sri Lankan government and that we will be reimbursed. But several hours later they sent us by WhatsApp the tickets that they could finally get online. At all times they communicated with us by WhatsApp.

1.00Booked tickets and had contact with Mahaweli tours several times via whatsapp in advance. The ticket would be delivered to the hotel 1 day before departure at 19:00. At 18:30 I get the message that they have not been able to get tickets. It is already too late to be able to cancel the booking and get your money back, so now we have to wait and see if that will still happen. (Also make sure that your passport number will be on the tickets if you do get tickets because they check strictly on the train.) So I would not book with Mahaweli if you want to be sure of train tickets on the desired day!

1.00We ordered tickets in time from this company because you can't buy tickets yourself, which are bought by companies like this so they can resell it for 5x the price. Still booked, passport details etcetera passed on. Then they said that the tickets would be delivered to our hotel, turned out not to be, we got a pdf'je the dat in advance. Both the starting station and the passport number were incorrect (there was a completely different local passport number), so were refused at the station and had to buy a new ticket for less than 1 euro instead of the +25 euro tickets. As a result, we were not in a reserved seat on the train but we were pressed together in a Third Party coupe. So we didn't get anything out of the booked ticket except a lot of stress and a terrible trip

2.00We specifically asked for second or third class tickets (as described) but they sent us first class tickets, where you can't open windows and doors and miss out on much of the experience. Fortunately the train manager still allowed us to stay in two seats that strangely and fortunately were free in second class. I also wrote to the Agency's whatsapp number to complain about this but they did not reply
