Chinese Fishing Nets
Chinese fishing nets(Cheena vala)are a type of stationary lift net in India. They are fishing nets that are fixed land installations for fishing. While commonly known as Chinese fishing nets in India, the more formal name for such nets is shore operated lift nets. Huge mechanical contrivances hold out horizontal nets of 20m or more across. Each structure is at least 10m high and comprises a cantilever with an outstretched net suspended over the sea and large stones suspended from ropes as counterweights at the other end which is operated by a team of up to six fishermen. While such nets are used throughout coastal southern China and Indochina, in India they are mostly found in the Indian cities of Kochi and Kollam, where they have become a tourist attraction. This way of fishing is unusual in India and almost unique to the area, as it was introduced by Chinese explorers who landed there in the 14th century. Indeed, one interpretation of city name Kochi is ‘co-chin', meaning like China.
Church of Saint Francis
St. Francis Church, in Fort Kochi (Fort Cochin), Kochi, originally built in 1503, is one of the oldest European churches in India and has great historical significance as a mute witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama died in Kochi in 1524 when he was on his third visit to India. His body was originally buried in this church, but after fourteen years his remains were removed to Lisbon.

I have been going to Fort Cochin for many years and always try and choose Niyas when I need an auto rickshaw. He is helpful and reliable and will take me to where I want to go (unlike other drivers who try and take you to place where they earn a comission!) He listens, is honest and trustworthy, and understands the needs of tourists and nothing is too much trouble. He is a careful driver and I always feel safe in his hands. A great family man who will always do his best for you. Recommended.

I hadn't really planned anything, I had a week to explore Kochi before my friends wedding and was recommended Niyas by a hotel owner. It was the best unexpected decision. I didn't have any plans so I just said show me some cool places and he did exactly that. He knew the whole area so well and I had a really rich and full experience of Kochi both in tourist areas and non tourist areas. My whole day was filled up with adventures I didn't expect or plan for. Lots of good eating spots, beautiful sightseeing areas and I also went around Biennale art festival which happened to be on at the time, absolutely mind blowing. As a tour guide, Niyas genuinely wants you to have a full rich experience and makes sure to adapt to whatever you are wanting to do, helping book or plan accordingly or recommend how to go about it and where to go etc.. Thankyou Niyas!! Laurie

Nias is a very smart, reliable, and helpful driver. He is respectful, well-educated, fair, and honest. You can trust him 120%. Meeting him truly makes your trip better. Taking a tuk-tuk is the best and most authentic way to travel short distances in India. It’s adventurous and fun—and with Nias, you’re guaranteed a safe and enjoyable ride. If you travel alone he will take care of you like your sister and makes sure you habe everything you need – not only driving. I was sick when I was in Kochi and he oranized everything I needed and brought me to the right people.🙏 I will never forget that.
