We will visit the largest colony of the Magellanic penguin in all of South America. From September through April, Punta Tombo hosts approximately one million penguins that arrive to complete their breeding cycle and the molting (change feathers).

Other specimens of guanacos, Patagonian hares, and other terrestrial fauna complete the scene; In addition, they will have a privileged view of the Atlantic Ocean coast.

As long as the time allows, upon returning from the reserve we will give you a city tour of Puerto Madryn before dropping you off at the dock exit.

  • Cruise excursion from Purto Madryn to Punto Tombo

While this was a long drive 2.5 hours each way, it was well worth the drive to see the magnificent Maggellan penguin colony. Our timing was right to see lots of about 6 week old babies. The setting was absolutely beautiful in a very rugged way. Our tour guide, Mariana, was charming, professional and entertaining. Her knowledge was impressive. Our ship arrived late- while we were stressed by the delay, she took it in her stride . Group size (20ish) was ideal - no delays getting on and off the bus. The lunch provided was appropriate and generous. The bus was comfortable and driver Willie handled it competently and pleasantly.

It’s a long trip but well worth it. Seeing the large Penguin colony in their natural habitat was the highlight of our holiday. You get really close to the Penguins walking around and in their burrows. You would never get to see anything like this anywhere in Europe. Our guide Valera was very good and told us lots of facts about Argentina and the penguins.

If you want to see penguins you will. We saw several hundred and some nests/burrows were only a foot way. The burrows had at least one adult and many had one immature chick. Penguins were also out walking around everywhere. Very cute. Very easy walking on a well maintained boardwalk. A nice box lunch was included. The guide and driver were excellent. The only issue was the 2.5 bus ride to and from the penguin rookery. We had 60 minutes at the rookery which was enough for me. Overall well worth it.

This was a great once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was early January and we saw penguins with their fuzzy babies everywhere as well as guanacos. A million penguins nest all over this area. Some nests were within a foot of the walkway. After a long ride we arrived later than the cruise ship busses (but we did stay later than them). We were on the second bus and had to wait for a few stragglers at the start. We barely missed getting on the first bus which left much earlier. The rest stop enroute took too long, mainly due to the limited facilities there. Our tour guide told us we would see penguins right at the start of the walkway but keep going because we would see so many more. She also told us it would take about 45 minutes to get to end but we should do that. Both were great advice. We saw so many nesting penguins and chicks. Penguins crossed the boardwalk numerous times. Some stayed on the walk and we had to go around them. At the end are several beaches and penguins entering and leaving the water, which was cool to see. Because we stayed a little later, the crowds thinned out and we enjoyed the walk back. A that time, most of the penguins and their chicks were standing outside the nests facing the water, waiting for the mates to return with food. Our group decided not to stop at the dinosaur, which we still pasted in the interest of time. We had a boxed lunch on the ride back. It was plain sandwiches light on the meat and cheese, nothing great but it included a bunch of snacks and a fruit so it was okay. The bus was comfortable, the guide was great but the main thing that made this outstanding were all of the penguins and guanacos at Porto Tomba.

  • Punta Tombo Penguins

We enjoyed our excursion to Punta Tombo. The ride, however, is long. It was 2 1/2 hours away from the ship terminal. Be prepared to walk a lot. Fortunately, we had a beautiful day so walking was enjoyable. Our guide was very knowledgeable and worked around our schedule to provide the best experience while getting us back to the cruise ship on time.

Walking among the penguins was amazing!!. Our guide did a excellent job of "herding cats". We were there ahead of the cruise ship crowds.

Communications with Sussanich Turismo were prompt and good and we found their representative easily at the port entrance. The coach journey was long and it was difficult to hear the commentary but I think it was good. Not a lot of scenery to enjoy, mostly scrub, a few birds and a sighting of a herd of Guanaco. However to wander amongst wild penguins made it worth while; the efforts to keep them in their wild, natural state was impressive. They had priority on pathways and tourists had to keep at least 2m from them; they were totally disinterested in people. The walkways are boardwalks and gravel, walk to the end, the view of them near and in the sea is well worth it. Facilities there were very basic and toilets fairly grim, there was a small museum showing the history of the estate.

  • Great trip - thoroughly recommend!

An excellent day out with a very good guide, who gave lots of information on the area and the penguin colony. Only downside was the length of the day which prevented visiting the town.

An interesting tour, just wonderful to see wild penguins in their natural habitat. The park is well run with every consideration given to the welfare of the penguins while allowing them to live a natural life. The pathways are grit, small stones and boardwalks, do go to the end to see them enjoying the ocean. The toilets are functional but a bit grim! Although warm it was very windy, needed a jumper and tie on hat. It’s also an early start; as soon as the ship docks The coach trip is long, about 2.5 -3.0 hours each way but Marionana, our guide, kept us entertained with lots of information about the country etc. she was friendly, charming and considerate. She even made a brief tour of the city for us. It’s certainly worth doing to see and get close ( min distance allowed 2M ) to wild penguins and observe their behaviour.
