Foreign visitors to Okayama want to experience "true Japanese culture." We have prepared two activities that allow you to experience the traditional culture of Japan and Okayama.

It is said that there are fewer than 30 swordsmiths in Japan who make Japanese swords as their main occupation. Yoshimasa Tomioka is one of the most promising swordsmiths, with numerous awards to his name. This is a rare opportunity to see him forge his swords up close.

Fifty years ago, when families were large, bara sushi was made and eaten in every household in Okayama. However, with families becoming smaller, it has become less common. This opportunity to experience the joy of making and eating it together as a group is a rare experience.

Both activities are part of a culture that even Japanese people can no longer experience.

What To Expect

This activity consists of two experiences. 1. Observe a Swordsmith Making a Sword Watch the daily sword-making routine of Yoshimasa Tomioka, a rising star in the world of Japanese swordsmithing. You'll witness the "Tanren" process, in which "tamahagane" steel is heated red hot in a flame, and sparks fly wildly as the steel is forged to a strong, rigid shape. An interpreter will provide translations of Tomioka's explanations about Japanese swords, and questions will also be accepted. This is sure to be a valuable experience that immerses you in the essence of traditional Japanese culture. 2. Bara Sushi Making and Lunch This activity involves participants making and eating "bara sushi," a local Okayama dish made with an abundance of seafood from the Seto Inland Sea and mountain produce from the Chugoku region. You can choose the toppings and portions of your choice. This is sure to be a wonderful memory of your trip to Okayama, Japan. Please take advantage of these two experiences of "true traditional Japanese culture, not just a show" as a day trip activity from Kurashiki.
