Kampong Phluk Floating Village

Enjoy Tonle Sap Lake, is a lake with no ends in front of you, and birds flying slowly overhead and surrounding with the interesting village. During the dry season (February to Jul), the village can be reached by mini bus or motorbike, as the – bumpy - road that is normally flooded dries up. In the rainy season (August to Jan), a short boat ride from the quay, through the wetland area will take you to Kompong Phluk. It is not a floating village but a village on high stilts as well as some floating houses and in spite of fishing is often the privilege of the Vietnamese minority but inhabitants of Kompong Phluk are almost exclusively of Cambodian origin. The villagers frequently move from house to another house during the rainy season, they live in houses built on stilts and move to small huts near the waterfront during the dry season to do fishing.

An excellent tour, the guide was funny and knowledgable and tailored the tour to suit my interests. I highly recommend asking to walk around the village to see the locals cooking food and meet the children playing.

This is a great way to explore Siem Reap area beyond the beaten track. Even though I went in dry season which means that the village is not really floating (I was aware of that), I had a great time. I think it’s super interesting to see what it looks like when there is no water and imagine how the life of locals is when they cannot walk but can only sail. We also stopped by a local market and explored the daily life of khmers (no souvenirs, no touristy staff, just dried fish, fresh chicken and fruits and veggies). The lake also impressed me by its size. I did not realize it would be this big. I love the how locals established little floating coffee shops in the middle of the lake. The one I went to also had a crocodile farm and I got to see little baby crocodiles along with lots of crocodile sculls 🙂 My guide Sophy was amazing. He told me about the daily life of khmers, their ways of living, shared his personal stories and answered any questions. The driver Mr. Tho I was skilled as a driver and very courteous. They were both great which I really appreciated as a solo female traveler going to a Khmer village. They even had cold towels for refreshment after each stop! Highly recommended for a cultural immersion.

  • Same same but different :)
