Maasai Mara National Reserve is an area of preserved savannah wilderness in southwestern Kenya, along the Tanzanian border. Its animals include lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and hippos. Wildebeest traverse its plains during their annual migration. The landscape has grassy plains and rolling hills, and is crossed by the Mara and Talek rivers. The area nearby is dotted with villages (enkangs) of Maasai people.

Early breakfast then check out. A simple complimentary lunch will be provided at the Travellers motel on your way back to Nairobi. After this, you have an option of visiting the nearby Maasai village for a cultural tour at USD 20 per person. We will have a chance to visit the traditional village of the local tribe here called the Maasai. They are happy to show us their culture and traditions, show us their lifestyle, and how they live and co-exist together with the wild animals. For Maasai, cows are wealth. Maasai have long employed a “green” approach to land management. Lion-hunting is a traditional—but no longer practiced—Maasai rite of passage. In decades past, young Maasai men proved themselves as warriors (moran) with the ritual killing of a lion—either single-handedly or in a group, and using only their iron spears as weapons. It’s nearly impossible to beat Maasai in a jumping contest. On arrival you will be dropped at the city Centre/hotel within the city center

I a very nervous to do this as a solo female traveler but it was GREAT! The camp was a decent experience. It was clean and basic but not too rustic. Think like a campground with cabins. There is electricity and hot water. Private bathrooms and showers. I was roomed with two people from my group, they were people I did. not know but we became friends. The grounds are secure and feel safe. The people that work there walk you to and from your tents at night if you wish. Food was good as well. Pasta, chicken, rice, bread, potatoes, tea and coffee. They also accommodated my being vegetarian with eggs. They staff were very nice. They would sit and talk with us. I even got to dance with some of them! The safari itself was nice. It was my first time. I went during the beginning of the great migration. We saw a lot of wildebeests and zebra. We were able to see a few lions and cheetahs very close up. Elephants, giraffes, vultures, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, Ostriches and I am sure I am forgetting something. Something to keep in mind as a first timer for safari is that while you do see a lot, it does take a long time to drive. So there might be several hours where you don’t see many things, and other hours where you see a lot. It is about patience. Our driver was good at finding many things for us. I loved being up to stand and look out of the roof top too. If you have never done a hot airballon I recommend it. If you have, I done recommend. It is very expensive and I have done it before for much cheaper. However, it is a beautiful experience for a first time person. PLEASE NOTE PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES FOR THIS. There were two people in my group who were not able to go into the balloon because you have to lay dow and crotch. So this is not good for elderly, anyone with a back injury or a knee/leg injury. We also went to the Maasai village the last day. It was a warm welcome but a bit rushed the tour. Keep in mind bringing extra cash for this experience, you will have to pay to enter the village and will have two opportunities to purchase souvenirs while inside…so don’t spend all of your money at the first opportunity. I enjoyed learning about the culture.

The tour is from Nairobi to Marsai Mara by jeep which is a 6-7 hour journey. I originally booked a lodge but a few days before the trip, the tour operator asked if I wanted to change to a tent which I agreed. The tent is very basic, just a bed, shower and toilet. There is no table and chair, no place to hang up your clothes. So for 2 days we live out of our suitcase. The tour has 7 people in 1 jeep. The driver/guide did not talk too much about the animals unless we asked. We did see many animals while touring the park.

Tour was fun and our game driver was amazing. However, the company was not helpful and lacked transparency. Missed our lunch. Tour itinerary did not match their Viator details.

It was amazing, our guide Sammy (or Charo) was very accommodating, experienced and had a wealth of knowledge. He went out of his way to make sure we get the best experience possible. The Jambo mara lodged was very nice and i got a glads cottage with a wonderful view.

In August 2024, I traveled with my husband and father-in-law to the Mara with Perfect Safaris Tour Operation. Samy was our tour guide and first thing to note - Samy is hilarious. He rightly gathered that my dear FIL is a talker and kindly seated my FIL next to him up front. Samy took one for the team and five hours later, we heartily thanked him;). Beyond that, Samy was full of insider & additional knowledge. Note: we've done other traveling in Kenya and know the baseline of education expected of professionals in tourism (ongoing education, etc.) Samy exceeded a "typical" guide, giving more background information related to recent changes in the Mara. Very interesting. The accommodation was surprisingly up-scale for a more "budget" tour - we even had plentiful hot water in the shower:). Perhaps the most incredible part of the tour was one Samy couldn't plan for - we were lucky enough to view a leopard mom and two cubs.
