What To Expect

Led by a bilingual Japanese host, this intimate small-group activity recreates the friendly spirit of the Heian period, when tea gatherings were less about ceremony and more about connection and fun. You’ll learn the cultural roots behind the Japanese tea ceremony in a relaxed setting that celebrates curiosity and laughter. Together, you’ll make beautifully shaped Japanese sweets (和菓子) — each with its own story and seasonal meaning — before preparing and tasting a delicious bowl of matcha green tea. As you enjoy your creations, you’ll take part in lighthearted games and conversations with your host, discovering how tea culture continues to bring people together in Japan today. And if you’d like to complete the experience in style, you can wear a rental kimono for free during the session — an optional but highly recommended touch to immerse yourself fully in the moment. Come for the sweets, stay for the stories, and leave with new friends and a deeper appreciation for the heart of Japanese hospitality.

If you want to learn about Japanese tea ceremony this is the perfect place. You get a small educational lesson before getting started. You make a yummy sweet treat, then learn about making the tea. I would do this again. The staff was amazing with explaining things and so patient with us.

I went to the tea ceremony and made the wagashi at the BUB Activity Center and it was so cool! The sensei is good and educated in a relaxed way, so not nervous at all. I also used to wear a kimono, feeling the Japanese vibe, really calm and zen. Perfect for those who want to try tea ceremonies without feeling too formal or ribbed. It is also very friendly for families and children, there are many other activities options as well. If you're on vacation in Japan and want to try something different, you should come here! I know English too ☺️
