It was part of the ancient city of Thebes and was the burial site of almost all the kings (pharaohs) of the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties (1539–1075 BCE), from Thutmose I to Ramses X. Located in the hills behind Dayr al-Baḥrī, the 62 known tombs exhibit variety both in plan and in decoration. In 1979 UNESCO designated the valley part of the World Heritage site of ancient Thebes, which also includes Luxor, the Valley of the Queens, and Karnak.
Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el Bahari
The mortuary temple of Hatshepsut is a mortuary temple built during the reign of Pharaoh Hatshepsut of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt. Located opposite the city of Luxor, it is considered to be a masterpiece of ancient architecture. Its three massive terraces rise above the desert floor and into the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari. Her tomb, KV20, lies inside the same massif capped by El Qurn, a pyramid for her mortuary complex. At the edge of the desert, 1 km east, connected to the complex by a causeway lies the accompanying valley temple. Across the river Nile, the whole structure points towards the monumental Eighth Pylon, Hatshepsut's most recognizable addition to the Temple of Karnak and the site from which the procession of the Beautiful Festival of the Valley departed.

We just completed a 4-day Nile River cruise from Aswan to Luxor, with Kareem as our private Egyptologist guide. The boat Renaissance crew (freshly pressed linens everyday and good food with Ramadan and Mansour waiting on us, dining becomes an experience. and Thomas from reception gets an A+ rating. But what elevated the entire experience from great to life-changing was Kareem, our tour guide. As a trained Egyptologist, Kareem didn’t just show us temples—he resurrected them. At Philae Temple, he read the hieroglyphic love poems to Isis aloud as the sun rose, turning stone into song. At Karnak, he traced Ramses II’s propaganda campaign across 134 columns like a political thriller. By the time we reached Luxor Temple, it is like a pharaoh’s dream, he had us convinced the gods were watching.Kareem reads people as fluently as he reads hieroglyphs. When the heat hit, he rerouted us to shaded colonnades and arranged cold karkadeh without a word. His dry humor (“Ramses II: 90 kids, zero chill”) had us cackling in the Valley of the Kings. Honest, kind, and endlessly patient, Kareem steered us clear of tourist traps. He even timed our Edfu and Kom Ombo visits to beat the crowds—pure wizardry. The Nile cruise was luxury incarnate, but Kareem was the soul. If you want ancient Egypt to leap off the page and into your heart— Book Kareem. Highly recommended!

Our journey on Farah Nile Cruise was an experience of a lifetime. We visited historical sites such as the Philae Temple and Abu Simbel, which struck us as incredible. Mohamed, our guide, has a deep knowledge of ancient Egyptian history and the explanations are lively and interesting and impressive. The boat is well equipped and the catering is very attentive. The most exciting is a hot air balloon trip in Luxor, overlooking the whole city and offering great views.
