The Khmer Rouge turned Toul Sleng High School into a center for interrogation, torture and death. Thousands of photo of victims can be seen in each room. You will walk slowly and investigate the materials used for interrogation of prisoners. After that we travel about 15km toward southwest of Phnom Penh we will arrive at Choeung Ek. The memorial at Choeung Ek just outside Phnom Penh was an orchard! And a Chinese cemetery prior to 1975. During the Khmer Rouge regime, it became one of the killing fields the site of the brutal executions of more than 17,000 individuals, most of whom first suffered through torture and deprivation in Toul Sleng Prison. Choeung Ek is now a group of mass graves and a memorial stupa containing thousands of skulls. Come back to hotel and drop off.

Wow what a trip. I welled up many times, no amount of research can prepare you for what you see. It’s a must-do trip in Phnom Penh and we are so glad we went on a private tour with Barang. He told us his personal experiences, detailing what his family went through before they died and how he grew up in the aftermath. A hard-hitting day with a passionate guide. Thank you, Barang, for sharing your story with us.

Our guide was exceptional and had a breadth of knowledge through both first hand experience and understanding of the broader effects the regime had on Cambodia, as well as the events leading up to, and post intervention forces arrived at the capital. Can’t recommend enough to anybody seeking a quality tour, travelling in comfort with minimal waiting around and transit time.

Mr Sok is a very well read and knowledgeable guide with many moving specific anecdotes in addition to broad understand of general history. We also visited the genocide museum where he was able to share specific stories of some of the prisoners and survivors. A half day we will not forget.

  • Essential learning but sad.

Our guide Lina, was excellent, she explained the history really well and in a sensitive way. Lina also answered any questions that we had very clearly. It is a very sad part of Cambodia’s past and is heartbreaking but is important to learn about. Walking around the cells, seeing photos of victims, the conditions in the prison, along with the bones and skulls in the Stipa and remains of half buried clothing - all brought the experience very close. Sad, but well worth it. We went as a family, but our children are 26 and 24. I wouldn’t recommend taking younger children.

This private tour in Phnom Penh is highly recommended. My tour guide Ms Sreyneang (Neang) was so detailed in terms of Khmer history including key dates. She has a very thorough understanding and she explains so well.
