Khor Virap is the place where Grigor Luisavorich (St. Gregory the Illuminator) was imprisoned for 13 years before curing King Trdat III of a disease. This caused the adoption of Christianity in Armenia in the year 301.
In fact, the name Khor Virap means “deep pit”, named after the prison where St. Gregory the Illuminator was held.
The next stop will be Monastery Noravank, which dates back to XIII—XIV centuries. The complex includes the 1339 St. Astvatsatsin (“Burtelashen”) sepulchre-church, St. Stepanos Nakhavka and gavit, the St. Grigor Church and Stepanos Orbelian Sepulchre, the remains of medieval chapels and residential quarters and a modern office and hall.
In the end of our trip you have an opportunity to taste armenian wine in Areni winery.

We had booked a tour three months in advance, which canceled at 8 PM night before. We were left in a jam and quickly booked this tour. It was absolutely perfect!! The driver was so kind and professional. It almost made us grateful that our original tour was canceled. We would highly recommend this one!

Our trip did not include a visit to Areni winery (we went as part of one of the other tours we took on a different day). This was one of our favorite tours while in Armenia. Arev was our tour guide and Artur was our driver. We were amazed to see Khor Virap and learn about the shocking history of this place. We were able to climb down into the prison cave (it was a bit scary to use the latter but very interesting to see the cave). We also really loved seeing Noravank, located in such a breathtaking location. It is surrounded by red rock cliffs and is such a unique landscape. We highly recommend this tour!

It was such a lovely tour! The sights was beautiful and we took a lot of photos. Our guide was very well informed about the places we went to and answered all our questions about Armenia in general. The driver was responsible and took good care of us. Thank you!!!

It was such a nice tour, we stopped at all places we wanted to see and the driver even showed as an amazing restaurant cause we were already hungry. Further he told us some facts about the sites and about Armenia. Highly recommended!

I definitely recommend this trip. Maria had lots of information on the old and recent history of the region, and we also stopped several times on the way, sometimes with a detour from the originally planned route, to make photos of the scenery. If you like the spirit of Indiana Jones , then Noravank is definitely the place to be. You can easily skip the winery though, it looked like a place for mass tourism (different sorts of wine served in the same glass, with very little explanation).

We had a great experience at this private tour organised by Land of Noah. The driver and guide, Mr Arthur, was very helpful, friendly, courteous and informative. He was well versed in English, and happily answered all our questions. The Khor Virap monastery overlooking Ararat mountain was a sight to behold, and the Areni winery tour was quite charming too. It was nice driving around the wine growing region and walking among the vineyards. The day was capped off with the most memorable lunch we had at a family owned local restaurant with all produce, including the wine and vodka, produced in-house. It was truly memorable and can't thank Mr Arthur enough for the wonderful day tour. Highly, highly recommend and value for money too! 😊

I cannot recommend this trip enough. The driver, Artak, and the guide, Arman, were with me on two trips while in Armenia and both were extremely friendly, funny, informative and had great English. The trip itself was amazing. I went in early march and we were nearly the only people at Khor Virap and other landmarks. Due to the weather and some extreme snowfall we could not travel to some parts mentioned in the trip, but the guide and driver were quick to make other plans and we visited some other sites at lower altitude and still had a wonderful day. No time was lost and no shortcuts were taken, meaning that I still had an incredible time. I would highly recommend the trip to Khor Virap and Areni, and if you are doing any tours with Land of Noah while in Armenia, I would highly recommend requesting Arman and Artak as your guides. Not only did we visit some incredible attractions, but I learned so much about Armenia as a country, its culture, history, cuisine, industry and so much more. Don't be afraid to ask loads of questions!
