Although I’ve attended many experiences through Zoos Victoria, I continue to be in awe of the knowledge and professionalism of the keepers and hosts alike. For the seal experience, our host was Leigh and the keepers were Ian and Surikiya (? Spelling). The experience itself consists of both a keeper presentation and watching a training session using an actual seal. Surikya delivered the presentation to the group about the types of things involved in animal care, including why the keepers do certain things. For instance, the training sessions; Ian conducted physical aspects of the training session such as giving the commands to Iha (the seal) and delivering the positive reinforcement where she complied. He was thorough in his work but also very gentle with Iha as if he was working with a beloved family pet: he reminded me of something of the nicest local vets I’ve dealt with over the years when bringing my family’s cats for vaccines and/or treatment. While he did this, Surikiya explained about how training sessions are a valuable opportunity for conducting different health checks on animals (including seals) and how they prepare them for being handled by vets if required. At the same time, she explained about the importance of giving animals choice as opposed to coercing them into participating. I found all of the above to be very informative and interesting. Yet hands down, the best part was being able to see a seal up close and personal. I’d have loved to have taken Iha home 😃 Naturally, I did the next best thing: a visit to the gift shop for a plush seal.
