The zone features a series of confluent rivers such as El Volcán River, Yeso River and Colorado River, as well as other minor streams, including San Gabriel, Manzanito, Coyanco, El Sauce, El Manzano and San José. The main locality is San José de Maipo, capital of the commune that includes all of the Andean sector of the Metropolitan Region

Tour delivered on promise. Early hotel pickup and after they collected the other visitors ( total 17 guests) we headed out of Santiago. We drove for about 1h before stopped for breakfast. Ham and cheese ciabatta toastie and a flat white for 10,000 pesos was what was needed to face this cold morning (0 deg C). We were advised that it had snowed up on the mountains and so this stop also rented wet weather boots, jackets and trousers if required for 10,000 peso. We return to the same spot for lunch and the rented gear is returned. We continued driving for another hour after our breakfast stop, until we had ascended 2400m into the Andean mountains and then walked up to the 2500m point along a gravel side road. Abit of muddy and icy soft patches on the pathway made the boot rental a wise choice. The two look outs were great. Being cloudy, the surrounding mountains had a reasonable amount of snow so that famously green coloured water lake was not seen. But the snowy vista had a wintry charm to it. We were supposed to also view a nearby active volcano in the area but as the clouds closed in on the Cajon deal Maipo, the tour guide suggested we were unlikely to see the volcano lake as it would have been clouded over. We headed off to lunch and dropped off our rented wet weather gear. The lunch stop menu was reasonable in quality and price. From there, we stopped at the Casa Chocolate for a hot chocolate drink, and tasty treats before heading off to a picnic ground where the tour guide put on a small spread of cheese, salami and chips with a small sample of Chilean wine or melon juice for the non drinkers. From there, we headed back to Santiago. Our tour guide and driver - Francisco was great and personable. He shared facts about the area which made the day quite enjoyable. It was a great day out and see something different. Interesting big fact, the place where we got breakfast and lunch had free toilets, but there was two stops where payment was required. What was surprising was that it could be paid by card. We were on the side of the Andean mountains and wireless payment was possible. That just made my day.

Edison was a great guide and spoke fluent english. Our group was full so the car was quite packed. After all there is plenty of travel by car.

I have travelled to over 70 countries with friends and solo and have also done several tours with Viator and other providers. This was by FAR the worst experience I have ever had. The tour company is a COMPLETE SHAM. The picnic provided is a couple of blocks of cheese and a couple of slices of ham with one bottle of wine shared between 10 people. I was injured on the trip by a piece of luggage someone else had stored and the guide refused to offer any medical help when asked. I then contacted the tour company who insisted I was lying rather than apologising (why would I lie about getting injured!?) and then proceeded to fight me on the 'truth'. I would NOT RECOMMEND this experience to anyone. Far better to travel with other tour companies than MTO.
