Tarquinia was the most important Etruscan city in the seventh century BC and it is particularly famous for the Monterozzi Necropolis (also called Necropoli di Tarquinia), an ancient cemetery from pre-Roman times which houses more than two hundred painted tombs beneath its green mounds.
You will explore imposing halls carved into the rock copying Etruscan houses (Necropolis literally means “City of the Dead”) to admire the bright colors used by the ancient Etruscans to paint landscapes, exotic animals and scenes of everyday life.
Thanks to our knowledgeable and passionate guide, you will discover the secrets of the most beautiful and fascinating tombs: the tomb of the Leopards, with its banquet scenes that show the incredible freedom of Etruscan women, the tomb of Hunting and Fishing, which represents the typical activities of the aristocracy, the tomb of the Warrior, where funeral rites are represented (including the cruel games that inspired the subsequent gladiator fights)…
Walking through the charming alleys of Tarquinia, dotted with medieval towers and splendid palaces, you will reach Palazzo Vitelleschi, which houses in the National Etruscan Museum the most precious treasures of the ancient city: carved sarcophagi, frescoes, jewels made of gold and gemstones, and the famous Winged horses!

5.00Looking for something different to do while in the Rome area this would be it. Didn’t even know the catacombs in Tarquinia existed. Combined with a museum visit was a great way to spend a few hours.

5.00Very complete private tour guide with a very friendly and pedagogue guide. In 3 hours very nice introduction to Etruscan culture in an enchanting setting.
A place well worth visiting and exploring. Would definitely do it again.

5.00Definitely worth visiting the site and museum. We booked a private two hour tour about the site and museum and the tour guide that we had was excellent. She was very knowledgeable of everything and spoke good English. I would definitely recommend seeing both places and doing it with a personalized tour guide. Well worth the extra money.

5.00We spent an amazing 3 hours with our guide Serena Paolini. Her knowledge was detailed and extensive. We saw a fabulous range of tombs in the Necropolis - as well as a tour of the museum in Tarquinia set in the grounds of a palace. It was beautifully presented! We would thoroughly recommend this tour as well as spending time in the medieval town of Tarquinia itself. Excellent value for money and a lovely personalised experience

5.00Serena was our guide and she was extremely knowledgeable and accommodating. The Etruscan tombs are incredible but be prepared to navigate short lengths of steep Steps up and down to see them.

5.00Our Guide Serena Paolini was very good. Very prepared, she guided us to discover the secrets of the necropolis of Tarquinia with lightness and extreme competence. Time flew immersed in the past that came alive as we passed thanks to the stories of our Guide. At Palazzo Vitelleschi the magic was repeated and Serena was even more engaging.

4.00Well-kept and truly extraordinary archaeological site for the uniqueness of the finds. Museum in period location and with breathtaking views from the top floor. We knew that in July it would be very hot and actually the site is all under the sun. The bookshop is missing, I wondered how it is possible!

5.00As is known, Etruria had 2 large centers (Cerveteri and Tarquinia) in which there are also 2 necropolises of great value but, while Cerveteri houses the exceptional Vase of Euphronius in its small museum, in Tarquinia the museum is larger, very well looked after, and positioned in the center of the city in an extraordinary location (Piazza Cavour) where many elegant and hospitable rooms overlook the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea, which the Etruscans sailed with ships that crossed to France, already in the times of the Phoenicians. Splendid, today also with the vision of a beautiful Christmas comet at the entrance to the square. Worthy of stopping and visiting OOOOO n° 6 photos

3.00Down and up from the tombs, from light to darkness with eyes struggling to adapt to changes in light, so I could appreciate the Etruscan masterpieces from the photos I took during the visit.
