A day of excitement, culture, kai and connection…
For generations, Te Puia has welcomed manuhiri (visitors) from all over the world to explore the magic hidden within Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley.
Our 90 minute guided tour will bring you face to face with the biggest, naturally active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere Pōhutu Geyser, and enjoy the up-close experience with the New Zealand Kiwi, in our brand-new Kiwi Conservation Centre. Be mesmerized by exploding mud pools all throughout the valley and gaze at beautifully crafted Māori-made artwork and sculptures visible throughout Te Puia.
Watch carvers and weavers demonstrate their skills at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, and hear our guides share stories passed down from their ancestors. Our wānanga (school) is a lighthouse for indigenous culture, worldwide. We are honoured to open the doors to our wānanga and show you the work of internationally recognised artists.

Loved the personal touches and local guide. It was great to be able to stay longer after the tour to revisit points of interest.

Very interesting place, lots to learn. Would have liked a bit more from our guide but he was good fun. Incredible natural features, well worth a visit.

We took the basic guided tour . The guide was useless ! He gave very little information about the geothermal area . The information about Māori culture involved getting the group( which was way too big) to repeat Māori words after him . In the Māori meeting room he called just the men ( honestly so bad ! ) on stage to learn the Hakka . This took about 10-15 minutes totally useless and boring for those of us not blessed with being a man .in the Māori crafts area he was more interested installing to his friends . All we learnt was how long it took them to make a carving. Another guide may have given you a different experience. But for us this was a total waste of money . Unfortunately as purchased through Viator I couldn’t ask for my money back . It was that bad I would have done .
