Lake Minnewanka
Lake Minnewanka is a large, glacial lake located just a few minutes from the town of Banff, inside Banff National Park,. It is the longest and second-deepest lake in the park. The name comes from the Stoney Nakoda people and means “Lake of the Spirits.” - Surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and dense forests, the lake is known for: - Scenic boat cruises — the only lake in Banff where motorized boats and guided cruises operate. - Shoreline hiking — including the Lake Minnewanka Trail along steep cliffs and turquoise water. - Picnic areas & wildlife — popular for bighorn sheep, deer, and sometimes bears. - Underwater ghost town — Divers visit submerged remains of the old Minnewanka village, flooded when the dam was expanded in 1941. - Beautiful turquoise water — fed by glacial runoff, giving it its signature colour. It’s one of the easiest major lakes to access from Banff and stays open to visitors early and late in the season compared to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise.
Two Jack Lake
Two Jack Lake is a small, serene, turquoise lake located just a short drive from the town of Banff in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. Known for its calm waters and close-up views of Mount Rundle, it is one of the most peaceful and photogenic lakes in the park. The lake is popular for: - Picnicking and relaxing — quiet shoreline areas with beautiful mountain scenery. - Paddleboarding & kayaking — extremely calm water, ideal for beginners. - Photography — sunrise reflections of Mount Rundle are especially famous. - Camping — nearby Two Jack Lakeside and Two Jack Main campgrounds offer some of the best lakeside camping in Banff. - Wildlife viewing — elk, deer, and birdlife often appear around the lake. - Compared to larger lakes like Minnewanka and Louise, Two Jack Lake offers a more intimate and peaceful atmosphere, making it perfect for gentle outdoor activities or relaxing by the water.
