Lake Minnewanka

Lake Minnewanka is a large, glacial lake located just a few minutes from the town of Banff, inside Banff National Park,. It is the longest and second-deepest lake in the park. The name comes from the Stoney Nakoda people and means “Lake of the Spirits.” - Surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks and dense forests, the lake is known for: - Scenic boat cruises — the only lake in Banff where motorized boats and guided cruises operate. - Shoreline hiking — including the Lake Minnewanka Trail along steep cliffs and turquoise water. - Picnic areas & wildlife — popular for bighorn sheep, deer, and sometimes bears. - Underwater ghost town — Divers visit submerged remains of the old Minnewanka village, flooded when the dam was expanded in 1941. - Beautiful turquoise water — fed by glacial runoff, giving it its signature colour.
