White Water Rafting in Victoria Falls Victoria Falls The most frightening experience I have ever had. I thought I might die. This is a high octane activity for very fit young people who live on the edge. If you are over 40, think twice and over 60 you should not do this. First is the long descent into the bottom of the canyon, on steep metal stairs, which leave your legs shaking at the bottom. Then the descent of 19 rapids in a rubber raft. If you are lucky, you might not tip over and would arrive at the end exhilarated. Or, your raft might flip twice, as happened to me. I ended up under the raft both times, tumbling about as if in a tumble washer, being kicked in the head by other trapped people struggling to get out and gulping litres of the Zambezi river, I was picked up both times by outriders in kayaks, as I gasped and coughed and spewed out water. Then there is the one kilometre climb up and out, on a steep and slippery gravel trail with multiple rough stairs, in the baking sun, where I thought I might have a heart attack. At the top lunch was provided but most people were icing injuries: twisted knees, swollen ankles, bruised hands. For the next three days I could hardly climb stairs or sit down in a chair due to lactic acid buildup in my thighs from the climbing up and down the canyon, and I was coughing deep in my chest from swallowing all the water. I booked through Wild Horizons and I do NOT feel I was given a true idea of the experience. All the operators are the same. They want your $150 and that’s it. I am an active senior and an experienced swimmer and this was way beyond my capabilities. Be warned. Read similar reviews to mine over the years.
