  We booked the Scenic and Hiking tour with North Star Adventure, partly because it is run by a local indigenous operator. No one knows more about the land than the locals. We enjoyed the short hike very much. Joe and his team took to less traveled spots and we were able to enjoy the Cameron Falls fully and peacefully. Joe and Saige discussed and demonstrated ways to show us the respect of the land and the environment observed through their culture over the years. It was very refreshing.....Not just a tour to take pictures.

  I was nervous to go hiking at -20F, but there was no need. As long as you dress for the weather you'll be fine. The landscape was beautiful, as was the view from the highest point on the trail. Brenden pointed out signs of local wildlife, and talked about traditional uses for some of the plants and trees growing there. The hike was just enough physical activity to be refreshing without being overly strenuous. The trail included elevation changes, but no climbing was necessary. I recommend wearing contacts rather than glasses if the temps are low, and be prepared to experience the forbidden mascara that is frozen eyelashes.

  The ice road tour was wonderful. U have traveled a lot but that was something I’ve never seen before, also I learned a lot about the local life and nature from the tour guide. I would strongly recommend!

• Winter hikes and aurora hunting with North Star Adventures

  I'm a solo traveler who went with North Star Adventures for their winter hike day tour and three nights of aurora hunting. While booking my tours, I really appreciated how responsive the team was in answering my questions and following up with confirmations. The team was also very much on top of things once I actually got to Yellowknife. For the winter hike, the team really went above and beyond with making sure I got to experience it to the fullest! Joe is an amazing guide and personally went through the trouble of breaking trail through deep snow for the tour. It was also very nice to listen to his stories and learn more about indigenous culture. The team also took amazing shots throughout the hike which was a nice touch! While I did not see the aurora due to the consistently cloudy weather (August, September and March are apparently better times to visit Yellowknife!), Joe and his team were good sports about it and still did their best to drive us around and look for breaks through the clouds. We got to hear some nice stories about life in Yellowknife, and one of our guides Brenden even lit a fire for us and took us out to check out a frozen lake. Whenever I visit Yellowknife again to try my luck with aurora hunting, I'll definitely hit up North Star Adventures for their expertise again!
