Gun-galuut Nature Reserve
The Gun-Galuut Nature Reserve is protected in order to conserve threatened species. Citizens representing Khural (local Parliament) in the sum of Bayandelger, province of Tov, created the reserve in 2003. It’s composed of three zones : one is “touristic” and open to visitors, another one has a restricted access, and the last one, central, is forbidden. In the reserve, high mountains, steppes, rivers and lakes, and a humid zone go together harmoniously. These landscapes have suffered little from the ravages of time. The reserve is also a welcoming land for rare animals like the wild sheep (argali), the Siberian white crane, the white-naped crane, the hooded crane, the cinereous vulture, or the swan goose.

I booked the tour to go to Gun Galuut and I was very excited. However, it wasn’t the tour I was expecting. The driver was very kind and spoke very good English but since the beginning he asked me several times about the tour and he asked me to see the itinerary. I felt like he was just told to drive me there. He said many times that Gun Galuut was very far and that the main road was closed. I felt like he wanted me to tell him not to go there?? Anyway, yes! It’s far and the reserve is very small, but the nature there is stunning! I saw many cranes, horses, goose and so on. But he didn’t give me enough time to walk and be on my own. He was bossy. Before the tour started I send the company a message telling them I didn’t want to have lunch (it was included) and I told to the driver the same since the beginning and I told him I didn’t want to go to visit the nomadic family. Yet, he stopped at one and I told him that I didn’t want to but he said he wanted to get horse milk for himself... then I slept on the way back and I noticed he stopped at least 3 times on the way!!! Then he stopped and told me he didn’t have breakfast and asked if it was ok if he had lunch at this place... what could I say??? I mean, I let them know in advance I didn’t want lunch so at least I was expecting him to be prepared to not stop. And since the road was closed he had to go back by driving around the mountain but instead he drove like 2 hours in the dirt so it was so bumpy and uncomfortable. It was very unpleasant. Yes, he was nice, yes nature is stunning but this is not a tour. This was an expensive and uncomfortable drive to Gun Galuut. By the way, my Mongolian friend helped me to call the agency in the morning and they told her they would send a female driver. They didn’t. If you are interested in going there book with someone else! Or arrange it with a taxi.

Short trip with very short stops. In the end, I spend 4 hours of a 5 hour trip either in the car or at lunch. I would try to combine the tour with something else.
