Chinggis Khan Statue Complex

The gigantic steel equine statue mounted by Genghis Khan himself is the largest statue of an equestrian in the world. This 40 m tall statue is located on a hillside on the bank of the Tuul River in an area called Tsonjin Boldog and connected to capital Ulaanbaatar by 54 km paved road. Tsonjin Boldog was chosen according to the legend that Genghis Khan found a whip in this area. In Mongolia, people believe that man finding a whip is a sign of fortune, good destiny, and occasion. The statue faces east, the direction of Genghis Khan's birthplace, and the sunrise. If you stretch your eyes to the east, you will see a small statue of his mother greeting him.

What the f*&! just happened?? First of all, communication was terrible, even the morning of. Someone kept texting me photos of the front of my building on WhatsApp, they looked like map street views. I finally figured out that my driver was standing across the street taking photos and sending them to me, evidently to let me know he was there. No message to say hi, I'm here, nothing. He didn't even introduce himself. When I asked him, he said his name was Bati. We stopped to pick up some other people. We drove in complete silence. Bati didn't introduce himself, give any details about the itinerary, any history about the spots we were going, nothing. It was so boring, having woken up early to attend, that I fell asleep on the ride. That just set the tone for an incredibly boring day. First was the Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex. He didn't say anything as we got out of the van and went up to the building. I assumed we were to go off on our own. When we finished there we got back in the van, and he didn't tell us where we were going. Each time we got back in, he didn't tell us. He didn't talk to us. At two of the spots, he had another tour guide from another van lead us around while he went off on his own. Then it turns out, we were finished and drove back to UB in silence. Good sites but pick a company that gives a s*!t.

Our guide was super fun and took amazing photos of us. We were allowed to take our time and never felt rushed.

It was very well run, but I felt the activities were a bit rushed without time to really savour it all. The guides were great and looked after everyone well and spoke very good English. Lunch was delicious and pick up and drop off at hotel was very convenient and easy. I think looking back, I would have liked a bit more time, maybe 30 mins, to look at the shops at the horse statue (some very nice souveniers there) and also maybe 20 mins just to savour the statue itself and enjoy its might from the outside. I felt we moved from activity to activity very quickly without time to break and enjoy; although it was a very big group and the guides did well to organise everyone in the time we had (with dress ups, camel ride, museum, eagle photos and climbing the giant horse statue). The museum talk was fascinating and I learnt a lot. The guide was extremely knowledgeable with history of Mongolia. We have lots of photos the guides took for us of all activities. Be prepared if climbing the turtle rock - it is very steep with a narrow impasse - not for the feint hearted!!! You need to be fit. The monastery was very cute with a nice view and a very gentle walk. Overall, I would recommend this tour but be prepared for a fast paced day packed with activity. It was worth the money - I just would have liked a bit more time or perhaps a bit smaller group.

Excellent daytrip and good value-for-money! Can only recommend it. Please be aware that the duration can be up to 10 hours due to traffic jams, so don't plan anything important in the evening.
