The Alhambra
On a rocky hill that is difficult to access, on the banks of the River Darro, protected by mountains and surrounded by woods, among the oldest quarters in the city, the Alhambra rises up like an imposing castle with reddish tones in its ramparts that prevent the outside world from seeing the delicate beauty they enclose. Originally designed as a military area, the Alhambra became the residence of royalty and of the court of Granada in the middle of the thirteenth century, after the establishment of the Nasrid kingdom and the construction of the first palace, by the founder King Mohammed ibn Yusuf Ben Nasr, better known as Alhamar. The fortress became a citadel with high ramparts and defensive towers, which house two main areas: the military area, or Alcazaba, the barracks of the royal guard, and the medina or court city, the location of the famous Nasrid Palaces and the remains of the houses of noblemen and plebeians who lived there.
Alcazaba
The Alcazaba plainly served a military function. The entrance to the Alcazaba was at the foot of the Tower of Homage . At the base of the tower is a slight slope. A simple L-shaped walkway keeps the main gate from being seen from the outside.

The place is beautiful and stunning and a great experience for anyone visiting Spain. The guides did a good job of explaining the history. The tour guides should be more mindful of people needing bathroom breaks and taking us to good facilities. This is particularly true if there are older folks in the group. We had a very poor experience with restrooms.

Very disappointed in the itinerary and value for money: 1) 5-6 hours spent in silence on the bus there and back. Tour guide was friendly but offered no real information related to history, context, relevance of sites we were visiting that day. 2) we stopped by a coffee shop for over an hour between the stop there and another stop back. This could have been a stop at a site rather than what was clearly a sponsored coffee shop. 3) Albaycin could have been explained on the way there and then reduced to a 20 minute walk about visit. Instead this was another half hour where the guide mostly explained significance of bitter orange and pomegranate trees. A total of a 1.5 hour visit so we can ultimately buy lunch and souvenirs. 4) the only actual site visit was Alhambra led by a local tour guide. He is the only reason this tour is getting a 2 star rather than a one star. Very well informed but tour was a 2.5 hour nonstop walk and we were so tired at the end it was difficult to truly pay attention. It may be worth building a 5 minute break into it. So, ultimately, a total of 3 hours is actually the tour. The rest is spending money on food or sleeping on the bus. Very disappointing. I would recommend taking a train to Granada and just hiring your own Alhambra tour guide. You will spend half the money, learn a lot more and accomplish it in 9-10 hours. Save your time and money.

It was a lot of travel time on the road, but it was worth it. Antonio did a wonderful job at explaining the Alhambra. Please bring lots of water and be prepared for the heat. He spent a lot of time in the gardens and it was hot. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity so I encourage you to go.
