What To Expect

The Alhambra

On a rocky hill that is difficult to access, on the banks of the River Darro, protected by mountains and surrounded by woods, among the oldest quarters in the city, the Alhambra rises up like an imposing castle with reddish tones in its ramparts that prevent the outside world from seeing the delicate beauty they enclose. Originally designed as a military area, the Alhambra became the residence of royalty and of the court of Granada in the middle of the thirteenth century, after the establishment of the Nasrid kingdom and the construction of the first palace, by the founder King Mohammed ibn Yusuf Ben Nasr, better known as Alhamar. The fortress became a citadel with high ramparts and defensive towers, which house two main areas: the military area, or Alcazaba, the barracks of the royal guard, and the medina or court city, the location of the famous Nasrid Palaces and the remains of the houses of noblemen and plebeians who lived there.

Alcazaba

The Alcazaba plainly served a military function. The entrance to the Alcazaba was at the foot of the Tower of Homage . At the base of the tower is a slight slope. A simple L-shaped walkway keeps the main gate from being seen from the outside.

A wasted and expensive Seville to Granada Tour having paid in excess of GBP250 expecting quality and a stress free trip. Booked originally with Get Your Guide Tour (booking all smooth ) but care as your booking is then passed straight on (when you arrive ) to local company Andalsur for the trip from Seville to Granada and then to another local guide Granavision for the Alhambra palace tours and Get your Guide is then out of the picture and are just involved in taking your money for the trip at the onset (at a huge premium I discovered ) while the responsibility of the tour is with the local companies. This is where the stress free became stress laden and disorganised. Firstly groups with Andalasur were too large a full large coach load (in excess of 60 ) with first hour wasted doing pick ups over town. The start of the tour was also delayed by a further hour (should have been a 7 am start but amended to 8am and pick up point was changed just a few days before notification by what’s up received from third party tour company Andalasur (thank god I check my what’s up regularly ) otherwise I would have gone to a different meeting point at a different time from that indicated originally by Get Your Guide. Accepted journey from Seville to Granada would be long but given the logistics of organising a tour independently thought it would be easier to go via a ‘reputable tour company’. In the end (6 hours on coach with 15 min stop at motorway cafe each way and 1 hour stop at Albaycin (not worth the visit) and just under 2.5 hours at the star attraction Alhambra so all rushed. Note No time in Granada town at all. Tip have a good breakfast beforehand or bring food with you as choice options to eat in Alhambra and Albaycin are very limited (time and calibre) unless you do not mind Burger King or a rock sandwich from motorway stops. Our friendly guide Driss from Andalasur, tried his best to control the group (warnings not to eat on bus fell on cloth ears and by the end of the three hour journey, the bus stank of Burger King and Nachos from food obtained from the motorway stop where there was no time to eat there and was smuggled on the coach) Driss, the guide from Andalasur tried his best to control a coach load of mixed nationals which included some noisy youngsters who were out of control by second leg home. His English was unfortunately a little on the broken side so not easy to follow when it came to his attempts to explain the history of the area (a shame as the history was interesting if it had been delivered to a better standard. The real trouble started when we arrived at the Alhambra palace Granavision visitor area around 2pm. We were advised we would be assigned to group 4 and the visitor area was absolutely chaotic. We were allocated to our Granavision guide (mistake name not provided at the onset and our guides nose ringed jewellery was our only means of ID to use later on when we swiftly lost her. We asked our guide if we had time to go to the toilet before starting tour and she said yes. By the time we returned some 5 mins later she had gone but were informed group 4 had moved to the gift lobby below. Disappearance no 1. We found the guide there received our tickets and were told we had to pay extra for the hearing aids. By the time we had finished paying some 3 mins later, the guide had disappeared again out of the gift lobby and was no where to be seen. Disappearance no 2. We could not find her after that and no one could assist as we did not have a name but at least we had our entry tickets so we were told to head for the palace area and wait for the group there. We tried to join the group 3 guide but as his entry had a different entry time to the palace we could not join. So without a tour guide from Granavision that we had paid for, we rushed through and waited by the palace in the hope of being reunited with our group. Our 3 pm entry time came and still no sign of our nose ringed nameless guide. Conscious of time disappearing, we entered the palace on our own and wandered around alone aimlessly where we stumbled across the group 3 Guide Carlos and his group again (which we had tried to join earlier) Seeing that we had still not found our guide, he kindly invited us to join his group for the last 10 minute leg of his tour. Thank you Carlos as this is the only guided tour we got ! He realised from our description who the nose ringed colleague was, phoned through to her explaining we were in the palace and mentioned to us she would be along soon and to wait for her in the palace. Our guide did finally turn up (half an hour later !) at 3.45 (so in total an hour and a half was wasted in waiting for her during tour and we had barely seen a thing) . She explained the palace was the last leg of the tour. We reprimanded her for not waiting for us at the beginning asked her what we had missed of the tour ( the gardens apparently as she had spent an hour and a half there with group ) We did not bother staying with her for the last leg having toured the palace ourselves and kind snippets provided by her colleague earlier and left to catch up on the gardens as conscious we would need to be back at the coach No attempt was made at the onset by this Granavision guide to ensure the group stayed together and she had no control of the group and wandered off . Shambolic disorganised and a wasted day. This trip was meant to be the highlight of our visit to Andalusia but left with bad memories. We should have done it on our own after all

  • Granada is worth the trip, but two days would be better!

Even though at the last minute there were no tickets left for the Alhambra - BE SURE TO BOOK IN ADVANCE, as it surely is the highlight of Granada on this one-day trip - I decided to take a (long) ride to see at least something of Granada The group had only a half hour to "run" through the Albaicin, whereas I spent the very rainy afternoon wandering around the narrow, winding streets, visiting a family-owned ceramic workshop (which my daughters had discovered 25 years ago), bathing in the Moorish architecture and colorful flora, getting lost, finally coming out of the delightful maze and discovering a magnificent little Moorish bakery with such a selection of sweets - along with a cafe con leche... The guide for our trip, Driss, is a very special person - passionate about his job and the city of Granada and all it has to offer - he was so sad there was so much to show us and tell us about and so little time - even more unique, he took much care with each and every passenger making it a very memorable day in Spain A one day trip to Granada is ambitious (3 - 3/12 hours bus ride each way), however comfortable), but being that the tour was about seeing the Alhambra, there was essentially zero time seeing anything else in the city. We didn't leave Seville until 9:30a or so - better to leave at least 7a so that one could see more of Granada than just the Alhambra having driven all that way. Another suggestion for Naturanda - organize a two-day tour to Granada - one for the palace, overnight in the city with a flamenco show in the cave-like settings in the Sacromonte neighborhood, and a second day of exploring Albaicin, the Cathedral and numerous other gems of Granada

Worth the trip! The Alhambra is unlike anything you’ll ever see so if you can carve out a day for this you must. On the 3hr journey we stopped for 20min for the coffee, bathroom, and quick bite to eat. Same but shorter on the way back. Tickets are very very hard to get for the Alhambra without a tour so booking this tour well in advance (2-3weeks) is one of the only ways to guarantee entry. Having a tour guide is the only way to appreciate the history beyond just its beauty.

  • “Irresponsible Tour Operations — Disappointing Experience

Our experience with this tour company, Naturanda, was extremely unsatisfactory, and I believe future travelers should be aware. After we arrived in Granada (Abacín), completed the guided walk, and finished lunch, we were instructed to meet at a designated meeting point before proceeding to the next destination. Despite following the instructions and arriving only two minutes late due to difficulty locating the exact spot, we were shocked to discover that the tour coach had already departed without us. What was most concerning was the lack of basic responsibility and safety procedures. No headcount was conducted, no attempt was made to confirm whether all participants were present, and no communication was made before leaving. Given that the next destination was approximately three hours away, this level of negligence is unacceptable. As a result, we had to arrange our own transport to catch up with the group — entirely at our own expense. To make matters worse, we have still not received reimbursement for the Uber fare from Abacín to Hotel Guadalupe, despite raising the issue. Overall, the tour demonstrated poor coordination, weak communication, and a worrying disregard for the safety and well-being of guests. Based on this experience, I would strongly advise others to think twice before booking with this company.

We were 40 on a coach, 13 hour round trip. 2 hours into trip we were informed that 10+ of us were not going into the key site the ALHAMBRA. we had been sold tickets wilfully misleading to visit the “surrounds” As in , visit Disneyland to sit in the parking lot or the Guinness brewery in Dublin to look at it from outside This is a regular scam and wilful con,a waste of money and even worse a waste of a days vacation. Some of us pleaded our case at the Alhambra customer service, to no avail. They had our Passport details that was required at time of the “No cancel” booking via Viator. Avoid at all costs, the small print is deliberately misleading. waste of a days vacation.

The Alhambra was to be the pinnacle of our Spain visit which unfortunately it was not. There was much communication breakdown initially and guides showing up late to the meeting point. As the trip progressed things got smoother but still confusing at times. A note - DO NOT SHOW UP AT THE ALHAMBRA WITHOUT YOUR ORIGINAL PASSPORT !!!. This was not clearly disclosed in Viator online info packet and we nearly got burned as we had copies. The state officials were understanding and made accommodations, but our on-site guide was very disagreeable about this as he had to wait several minutes for us to meet with officials. The Alhambra was fantastic and overall this was still a worthwhile excursion. Just be prepared for walking, crowds, and confusion.
