Tophet de Carthage

Today, many historians consider that the place called “Tophet” could have been a children's cemetery. One can imagine, in fact, that Carthaginian parents performed a special ritual there to the god Baal and to the “Lady Tanit”, the great maternal goddess, to dedicate their children who died in infancy to them. But this, the images imposed by Flaubert were so strong that it took many years to admit it. The giant statue of the “god Moloch”, the cruel priests, the flames of the stake, the barbaric rituals, the blood, and the cries covered the reality of the archaeological discoveries. Even today, part of the site of Carthage is called “Tophet” or – more correctly – “Sanctuary of Tanit and Baal”. You can see many engraved stelae that the ancient Carthaginians once deposited when making a wish.

Punic Ports & Museum

A guided visit on the shape of the legendary ports, the coveted basis of Carthage’s power and prosperity, remains. A narrow channel linked the southern, oblong merchant port to the northern circular naval port. This arrangement meant that the military port was hidden from the outside, but the Carthaginian navy could see out to sea. The military base had moorings for an incredible 220 vessels in dry docks and around the quay-lined edge. The 7-hectare commercial port was bordered by quays and warehouses. The ports were filled in by Scipio after Carthage’s destruction in 146 BC, but in the 2nd century AD, the Romans reinvented the islet as a circular form, with two temples, and used the port to house their merchant fleet, which shipped wheat to Rome. Rises in the sea level meant the quay walls had to be raised several times. By the end of the 6th century, the harbor had fallen into disuse.

Not as described: Tunisia Tours did not send licensed tour driver/guide. Car was dirty, NO seatbelts in back seat; only 1 window opened in back seat, no ac in vehicle, no wifi, driver talked on cellphone to boyfriend many times. The only plus was returning to starting point.

  • Excellent tour.

From the start, Ghassen was keen to know what we wanted from the tour, and he made every effort to tailor the day to our specific interest in the archaeology and history of Carthage. He was very knowledgeable about the sites we visited, and made sure we came away with good photos, new knowledge and experience of the modern culture of Tunis and Carthage. Throughout the day, he made sure we were at ease and comfortable - overall a fantastic guide who made us feel like welcome guests in his city. Five stars, would recommend to anyone looking for an insightful tour!

Ghassen is an experienced guide with rich knowledge of Carthage in Punic wars and good find of photo-shot places in Tunis Medina and Sidi Bou Said. Although the explanation in Bardo Museum is lack of depth and not as expected, the overall tour experience is quite good and worthy of the time.

We were picked up from our hotel on time .The guide told us a lot about the country and the surrounding area on the way to Tunis. We were in Carthage where we visited the Saint Louis Cathedral, the Antonius Pius Thermal Baths and the ruins of the ship's fortress. In Tunis we have the first mosque, the first school , in the Place du Gouvernement des Revolutions and in the old town (Medina). We had a coffee in the narrow streets in Souk (market district) and walked past the ministries. In the new town we saw the clock tower with gilded pyramid. Many impressions of the old and new districts. The architecture is impressive. We also drove through the French-founded neighborhood (Notre Dame). There are many residences there. We continued to Sidi Bousaid from Hammamet/sousse there we visited a market, the palace of Baron d'Erlanger . It was a beautiful view of the marina and beach. In Tunis we ate a kebab together with the guide ... which was so delicious that the owners should prefer to make a location at our home. The guide was very friendly , considerate and accommodating.Overall it was a nice day with lots of information about the history and the country Thank you for the unforgettable experience

In an experience like this you could not ask for better! Sun, sea, culture and history, the last two thanks to the illuminating doctrines of our guide, (who speaks fluent Italian), a professor of history and art at the University of Tunis, could not really ask for better, a real blast from the past and history of Tunisia with countless artistic hints of this fabulous country, if you go or are in Tunisia we recommend you book this excursion!

We enjoyed a full day tour with Ghassen, he is a very knowledgeable guide sharing his passion for the local history, culture and food with us. On the tour we saw all the main historic sites and Ghassen brought each one to life with stories and knowledge that he has gained from many years as a tour guide and as a keen global traveler himself. We would definitely recommend a private tour so you can shape the trip depending on your preferences too. Thank you for a brilliant tour!
