A complete and amazing experience in the history and operation on hard rock gold mining. Enter the tunnel and see exactly how they got the rock out of the ground. Then a session on the crushing and stamping process. This is followed by gold panning. Got 3 flakes of gold. Very exciting. Thank you AJ Mine!!!

We scheduled this last minute due to bad weather having us in port for 2 days instead of 1. This was the perfect thing to do during the rain. The guides were all fantastic in their respective portions from learning about inside the mine from the son of a miner that used to work there to those teaching us about the history of the area and about how to pan for gold.

The hard hats were pretty nasty, but I enjoyed the tour. There was a family in the mine that was obviously stricken by some sort of respiratory ailment. The tour leader kept trying to get us all to move in closer; I kept declining to get too close to the sick family.

Very informative of history and fun! I had never been in a mine before so it opened my eyes too what mining is and how they do it.

A true reality of underground mining. Guides were retired miners with an abundance of knowledge. Panning was an experience.

Overall, I really enjoyed this tour. The man who led us through the Mine itself had been a Miner for 40 some years in several different Mines, including the one we toured which really added to the experience. The little replica town was very cute - especially funny that the outhouse was in the "Tax Collector" facade (with a sign on the door labeled "Deposits only"). I enjoyed seeing the replica Gold Bar in the Mercantile, where the owner was also working and it was obvious she really enjoys what she's doing. It felt intimate and familial because of this and the enthusiasm of all the staff/owner. I appreciated that. The working stamping machine was also nice to see. I was not very good at gold panning, but I liked that I could watch and video it so maybe I can eventually get the hang of how to do it correctly. The ONLY negative was that they forgot to leave the wheelchair I'd requested at the Mine so the amount of time on my feet was pretty painful by the time that part of the tour was done (but I did it and it could have been much worse, so I'm still happy). I'm pretty sure they would have brought it if I'd said something, though. If you have any mobility issues, maybe just call the day of the tour to double check that the wheelchair will be available (I forgot to do that).

The mine is unique, even among others in the U.S. The history and presentation was interesting and enjoyable.

We were a group of 5 adults and this tour was great! Very informative, and also just really cool to go underground into the mine. I also really enjoyed gold panning, found about 8 flecks of gold! It was a good activity for the last day of our trip since it’s actually kind of relaxing, was a nice way to wind down and get a true Alaskan experience before heading home.

Lots of great info about mining around Juneau. They have condensed the experience to a short comfortable walk instead of having to walk miles underground. Absolutely enjoyable.
