The tour was 10/10 - the highlight of our trip to Bali! The transport was seamless - from the driver in Bali, to the escort across to Java (in the boat to make sure we arrived safely), then the driver in Java - it was an easy experience. Our guide for Ijen was Zai. He was very sweet and supportive. Zai spoke good English and was very knowledgeable about Ijen. We had climbed Batur a few days before so we were tired - Zai was encouraging but very patient and went at a pace suited to us and listened to how we were coping with the climb. He knew the best spots to rest and the best spots to take photos, and he took lots of photos / videos of us and even edited a video of our experience getting us through crowds which we wouldn’t have been able to do ourselves. My partner did struggle with the climb on the return part and he was exceptional with his advice and always made sure we were safe as some parts of the decent into the crater are quite dangerous. Simply put, our experience wouldn’t have been the same without Zai. We would highly recommend this tour!

The tour company was excellent. Great communication before the tour. Great communication about pick up. Constant attention by personal drivers and tour guides. Hand held figuratively and literally as I descended the crater. Service was excellent. All issues, such as me forgetting my jacket or rapidly resolved. The location was otherworldly. Seeing the blue flames, being in a different type of volcano cauldron, with sulfuric acid clouds and elemental sulfur precipitation on the ground. It is a geologist’s dream. The walk up and down the volcano were also beautiful. Going up was in the dark with a flashlight. Very unique. Coming down you had beautiful vistas and fog shrouded mountains. The guides and the other travelers were all extremely friendly. The travel was long. Stops were made when I asked for them or they needed to gas up. They stopped briefly at some temples and Lake Vistas. But the travel was long, so there wasn’t a lot of extra time for other stuff. We did have a local meal, that was very good. And we stopped at a cute boutique coffee shop in the Highlands. This was a bucket list travel for me. My three other companions decided to stay in their hotel in Bali. I have to say that the travel was arduous. From mid Bali it was six hours to the ferry. One hour crossing. Two hours to the volcano. Two hours up the volcano. 45 minutes down the volcano then on the way out reverse that. The whole travel took about 24 hours. This was on the go. I caught sleep in the back of a bouncing vehicle. Most people visiting the volcano were 20 year olds. Either from China, other Asian countries, and a few Germans. About 1000 people descended into the volcano on the weekday that I went. I took many breaks on the ascent. But I am a bit out of shape. It was an option for a “DeLorean” ride. Which was a wheeled sled that was dragged up the mountain. Several people took this option. Mostly people out of shape. The descent into the volcano was narrow and torturous. Everyone wants single file. Everyone watched every step. But all this was doable, and part of the experience. The day that I was there, the air was not bad. I put my respirator on when I was standing in front of the sulfur vents, at the bottom of the creator. Otherwise it was unnecessary. But as the wind shifted, your eyes would burn. And those who took their respirator off to get better pictures quickly put it back on. I felt no danger from the Sulphur clouds or the vented sulfur steam. Everything was extremely well controlled. The worst part of the air was all the sulfur miners smoking as they carry their product to the surface. All the guides or chain smoking the whole time too. I had more of a cough from the tobacco than I did from the sulfur. I have given it an unusually long description of my experience. Hopefully it will help you decide whether you want to meet this challenge. For me it was a dream come true. And this company and the guys were exceptional perfect so if this is on your list of must dues. You will definitely earn the right to say you visited this sulfuric volcano. An alternative to think about is to come by from your travels in Java. Possibly stay overnight in one of the hotels at the volcano. Enjoy the experience and then move on. Travel to this location was definitely the hardest part. I hope this helps future readers. Again this company was top notch, excellent, attentive. They were perfect in every way. Highly recommend them if you choose to do this travel. I can’t imagine a better experience or company. My driver was Gade (good Day). The tour guide for the drive was Suka and my personal hiking guide was Sugi. All excellent.

It was a great experience; the crater is a beautiful trek and the blue flame quite mesmerising. But I would not recommend doing this specific activity all the way from Ubud. There were sone confusion with our driver who arrived 2h late, and the whole journey to Ijen is exhausting. We didn't feel safe with our drivers who were recklessly driving and looked exhausting, theor eyes kept closing. The mount itself is gorgeous, it's an easy but demanding trek. You don't need super pro hiking gear. You may need a thick jacket or layer up as it gets quite cold while waiting for the sunset.

What a trip! Started with pick up at Ubud with our amazing driver Komang which was very attentive to our needs all the way to the boat. It is a long drive but traffic was on our side around 4 hours. Once there we were helped by a lady to cross to Java. Once there we had the friendly Andrew and Ismail who were the best! They took us to get the medical letter and to the mountain tracking start point. we had some coffee and we begin the tracking with our guide Reza. The tracking is more difficult than expected but 200% worth it. Even if not a weekend day it was busy but thanks to our guide we got ahead and had time to see the blue fire as well as the sunrise on top of the mountain. Our guide was so attentive as the way down to the blue flame can be challenging. If you listen to him no issues safety was. He took some nice pictures and we had a really good time. The return down is not easy. I think you need a good fitness level but some people offer carry up and down service for people that struggles so everyone can access. Overall we had everything included from breakfast (they gave us vegetarian but you need to ask before hand) to water and coffees and entry fees and boat ride. I recommend the private tour like we did for a better experience. Terima Kasih to all the amazing guides and drivers that gave us this experience.

Normally I don’t write reviews but this time I really feel like I should write it. I bought package from Bali included driver from Bali to ferry, someone who will take care of me on ferry Bali to Java, driver on Java, guide on Mt Ijen and breakfast. Driver who took me 4 hours from Ubud to Bali and back was lovely polite guy, he was on time both ways, I wish all good to him. Then some lady took me on ferry from Bali to Java at night time, on ferry there was a lot of men who kept harasing me, taking pictures and video of me, getting close to me, I felt the worst I felt during my two months in indonesia, the lady was sitting in front of me and she could hear everything but she was pretending like nothing is going on. When we arrived to Java new driver picked me up and we went to pick up other 10 people from hostels in Java to mt Ijen, all good, he was sometimes confused where to pick up people but I can totaly understand it can happen, soon we arrived to Mt Ijen base camp. We got our guide Suki who should be our guide to Mt Ijen, but he didn’t care at all. He was explaing important things about gas masks when some people were in toilet (he knew they were on toilet), he kept saying what is not his responsibilies and soon we start to hike. From the begining he push very very fast tempo, I am in very good shape and I couldn‘t catch them. Imagine hundreds of people climbing same way and your guide starts almost running, me and some other people got totaly lost. Yes of course there is milion people so you know which way you should go, but you could see others guides making sure that they have all of theirs people from their group, taking breaks, taking care of them, but not our guide, he was just running like we are in some race, then we havent seen him for realy long time. We met him only in crater where he pushed us to take picktures with blue flame and than we saw him again on the top of the mountain when he pushed us again to take pictures. During all track we have no idea when to put masks on or not, because we dont have our guide, it was very stresfull. Since I arrived to indonesia I was suprised how awesome and caring these tour guids are, but not this one. I had breakfast inclued- they gave me noodles and chicken, I am vegetarian so I couldn’t eat it, again it can happen, no bad feelings about it. Just info for vegetarian to bring your own food. Overall organisation good, drivers good, Mt Ijen guide and ''ferry lady'' horrible. Mt Ijen is beautiful and everybody should do it one time. Trekking poles cost 25 000/per one, glasess 25 000/ per one, before you start you can use toiletes for 5 000, and buy some tea, coffee, food. Hike is not easy but I would say it is also not so difficult as some people say, if you are used to do hikes no worries. If you are not uses to hike it can be difficult espesialy part when you go down to see blue fire, you can also take ‚‘taxi‘ and they can také you on the top of vulcano.
