Preah Vihear Temple is unique for its spectacular setting atop a 547-meter hill, its north-south axis layout (uncommon for Khmer temples), and its dramatic architecture that ascends the cliffside, blending with the natural landscape. It features a series of sanctuaries, causeways, and staircases that guide visitors upwards to the final sanctuary, all while offering breathtaking views over the surrounding Cambodian and Thai plains.
Masterpiece of Khmer Architecture: The temple is considered a masterpiece, with its design adapted to the natural landscape and its intricate carvings, many of which depict Hindu deities and mythology.
Dedicated to Shiva: The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, dating back primarily to the 11th and 12th centuries, although its history can be traced to the 9th century.

Preah Vihear Temple
King Yasovarman I (AD 889 – 900) built the central tower of Prasat Vihear and built Yasodharapura city on the natural mountain top. King Sursovarman I (AD 1002 – 1050) built the next central towers and rampart plus three Gopuras (monumental entrance towers). According to the inscription on the temple. the King prepared a celebration and invited the god Patresvara who stayed in Wat Pu (Pu Gogoda) in Laos with another god Sreisikharesvara. The king asked god Patresvara to protect and take care of the Khmer Empire. Pu Pagoda belonged to the Khmer before and during the Khmer empire as an ancient Khmer capital. King Jayavarman VI (AD 1080-1109) built two libraries, restored and repaired some parts of the temple. King Suryavarman II (AD 1113-1150) built the seven heads of the nagas (snakes’ heads) as well as the terraces and the statues of standing lions along the walking path.

I decided to go with Easy Angkor Trip, run by Mr. K. after having already visited other Khmer temples with him. Mr. K. and Mr. Nakhim, the driver, have been always very attentive. The long drive up to Preah Vihear was quite smooth and Mr. K. pointed out some landmarks, like the former Khmer Rouge territory, which I would have missed without him. After reaching the actual site, we spent more than 2 hours exploring the different buildings and Mr. K. took fantastic photos which he shared with me! A visit to Preah Vihear temple is a magic and unique experience, which I highly recommend. Despite a very early start, I had a most memorable day that would not have been possible on my own, thanks to Mr. K. and Mr. Nakhim! I will certainly return to Cambodia to continue discovering this wonderful country.
