What To Expect

Wellington

We'll pick you up at either 9.15am from port (cruise ship guests only) or 9.30am from Wellington Station and shuttle you to the start of the trail at either Maymorn or Kaitoke (your choice)

Start point of the Rail Trail for the 28km ride. You’ll start by cycling through the native bird-filled Pakuratahi Forest. Follow an old railway line over bridges and through tunnels, while pausing, if you like, to check out information stations detailing the enormous task of constructing the “Fell” railway system - a first for New Zealand at the time, and one of only a few around the world. Once you reach the summit, you will stop for a picnic lunch on a large grassy plateau next to the remnants of a historic station. After lunch, enjoy an exhilarating (but easily controllable!) descent to Cross Creek in the Wairarapa, with views of some of New Zealand’s stunning farming heartland.

From the start to the finish of the day was amazing. Alex from wildfinder was awesome friendly on time to pick us up from briefing all about the ride b4 we headed off. The ride was so enjoyable views amazing plus it's a great way to see the place. Also with the ebikes it's easy for anyone to conquer. Lunch was supplied which was fresh & plenty of it to keep us fuelled up. Would highly recommend this experience.

SHUTTLE ONLY: Featherston to Maymorn. This is the second time I have used Wildfinders shuttle service to do the Remutaka Trail (have my own bike) Both time I have found Wildfinder to be courteous, friendly, well organized and very professional. The driver this time was at the pick-up point early, called me and I was able to start the trail earlier than planned. he was very helpful. Wildfinder is a slick, professional operation.

Excellent experience with Wildfinder. A feeling of freedom for three days straight that lasts a week afterwards. There were some roads to navigate but cycle paths are being built along most of them.

Would not recommend using e-bike for this trip as the descending path is very narrow, rocky and curvy and the weight of motor makes it difficult to navigate the bike. My friend's bike motor kept shutting off during the trip and she had to walk her bike many times. I loved the suspension bridge. Beware some of the tunnels had deep potholes and easy to wipe out. The lunches were delicious. Would recommend using mountain bike instead of e-bike.

  • Fantastic excursion, not for the faint of heart!

Road and electric mountain bike up and down a hill/mountain! Was so invigorating and exciting! I’ve never done anything like this, and it might have been one of the best excursions we have ever done! Our young excursion leaders were wonderful, but they do let you ride on your own at your own pace. Road with some great people that were in our van from the ship! So happy, we did it!!

We really enjoyed out day on the Wildfinder eBike Cycle Tour. We were picked up at the Wellington railway station by Cooper who took us up to the start of the trail at Kaitoke. He gave us a very comprehensive safety briefing and explained all the features of the ebikes, and the various safety equipment that was with the bikes. We were also provided with an excellent map and instructions. The trail to the summit follows the old railway line and is reasonably easy going with some spectacular views, especially at the bridges. There are numerous sign boards along the route that made fascinating reading. It was a very windy day so we didn't stay too long at the Summit settlement and headed down the east side towards the Wairarapa, down the route of the old fell railway, to Cross Creek where we had our lunch. The packed lunch provided by WildFinder was excellent. The section of the trail from Cross Creek to the Cross Creek car park is a little more difficult and it’s only one bike wide, and you need to concentrate a bit more on this section. As we had made reasonable time we biked into a strong head wind through to Featherstone, where we enjoyed a cold drink at the Royal Hotel before being picked up by Cooper. We were then transported back to the Wellington railway station arriving back at around 3:30 PM. The ebikes provided were very comfortable and we still had plenty of range on the battery at the end as for most of the route we only needed to use the eco setting. The pannier bags provided held all the safety equipment and space for our lunch. We had a thoroughly great day out and strongly recommend this trip with WildFinder.
