Maritime Museum of San Diego
The Maritime Museum of San Diego, located along the waterfront, is home to one of the world’s finest collections of historic ships. As you sail past, you’ll see iconic vessels like the Star of India, the world’s oldest active sailing ship, along with a replica of the 16th-century San Salvador and the impressive HMS Surprise, known from Master and Commander. The museum offers a glimpse into maritime history, making it a striking sight from the water.
USS Midway Museum
The USS Midway Museum, located in downtown San Diego along the Embarcadero, is a maritime museum housed aboard the USS Midway (CV-41), the longest-serving U.S. Navy aircraft carrier of the 20th century. Commissioned in 1945, the Midway served for 47 years, participating in significant military operations including the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm, before being decommissioned in 1992. The ship was transformed into a museum and opened to the public on June 7, 2004. Visitors to the museum can explore over 60 locations throughout the ship, including the engine room, galley, sleeping quarters, bridge, and flight control areas. The museum features more than 30 restored aircraft spanning 80 years of naval aviation history, interactive exhibits, and flight simulators. A self-guided audio tour, narrated by former Midway sailors, enhances the experience by providing personal insights into life aboard the carrier.

Yesterday a friend and I participated in the afternoon sailing trip on the Liberty with Captain Phil. It was an amazing experience. It was a beautiful boat and the trip was very relaxing. The sunny day, waves and air almost lulled me to sleep. It was fun seeing the coastline and Captain Phil shared a lot of information about the area. This trip is for adults and relaxing - not a booze cruise! I highly recommend it!

If you want to feel the wind in your hair and the sun on your face, all while enjoying the ease of sailing with a captain who’s both professional and can bring a dad joke, Sail Liberty is for you. During our recent vacation to San Diego, we decided to do something on the water, and decided on a sunset sail with Sail Liberty. Captain Philip was a delight. Communications were on point, including detailed texts the day of our cruise ensuring we had the location and time handy. Once on board, we felt immediately at ease…glasses of wine, beer, and soda were offered along with a light snack. The 1914 restored wooden sailboat is a dream and when the sails went up and he cut the motor is was one of the most magical moments of our trip. 10/10 recommend. Some things to note…while the dock is close to downtown San Diego, it’s not heavily trafficked, so if you’re taking an Uber, you should plan for a bit of a wait at the end of the cruise. Also, blankets are provided, but highly recommend that you dress in layers as it gets cold on the water as the sun sets.

So much fun! This was our second time with Captain Philip on the Liberty - the last time "pre Covid" five years ago. The boat is spotless and impeccably maintained. The captain is clearly a confident and experienced sailor and knows the are well. He also has a great since of humor which is always appreciated!

Captain Philip is a life long sailor. He is affable and knowledgeable about San Diego and sailing in general. I highly recommend him if you're looking to sail the harbor.
