Jo’burg. Jozi. Egoli. Built on gold, Johannesburg has always been a city of opportunities!
Named after Johann Rissik (principal clerk surveyor-general of the Transvaal Republic) and Christiaan Johannes Joubert (chief of mining and member of the Volkstaad) who recommended the area be declared a goldfield, it owes its existence to George Harrison – a penniless prospector who first discovered gold here in 1886.
Trace Johannesburg’s history from its humble gold-mining beginnings to the pulsing streets of this modern-day African economic giant with a personal tour from Stephenson Adventures. This tour is simply the best way to explore and experience the city of Gold.

Phenomenal tour. Learned a great deal about the history of South Africa and the role of Johannesburg within that overall history. Visited all of the key sites in the city to help illuminate that history. Mo was a great guide to lead us through (including his "hometown" of Soweto.

This was a great experience seeing some of the highlights of Johannesburg with a knowledgeable guide. Tsholo managed to show us the diversity of the city while explaining its sometimes difficult history. Soweto was a highlight!

First of all Stephenson Adventures tours are typically small groups so you get more interaction with your tour guide than large bus operators. In our case it was just the two of us and our tour guide, Tsholo Mabasa. He is very knowledgeable, personable, and passionate about his city and its people. Tsholo showed us Johannesburg as it is: from affluent neighborhoods of the North to slams of Soweto. Museum visits included in the tour substantially expanded our knowledge of South African history and made us appreciate what the country has accomplished. That was mot just a typical city tour with a bunch of photostops, but a study of human suffering, sacrifice, and resilience.
