Jo’burg. Jozi. Egoli. Built on gold, Johannesburg has always been a city of opportunities!
Named after Johann Rissik (principal clerk surveyor-general of the Transvaal Republic) and Christiaan Johannes Joubert (chief of mining and member of the Volkstaad) who recommended the area be declared a goldfield, it owes its existence to George Harrison – a penniless prospector who first discovered gold here in 1886.
Trace Johannesburg’s history from its humble gold-mining beginnings to the pulsing streets of this modern-day African economic giant with a personal tour from Stephenson Adventures. This tour is simply the best way to explore and experience the city of Gold.

Our tour with Tsholo was absolutely amazing! They both went above and beyond, making yesterday a highlight of our trip! Not only did we get to see so much of Johannesburg’s beauty, but we also got to see some of the ugly past that paved the foundation on which Johannesburg and Soweto are built today! We are so glad we booked this tour! It was absolutely amazing!!!! I can’t recommend them enough!

Sorry for my late review, but I wanted to take my time to write it. This tour was the best tour I have ever taken. Impeccable service, our guide Banele was truly caring, attentive, and ready to help. He is professional. As a solo traveler, I couldn’t have asked for better. He answered all my questions, stopped at specific places, and even took photos of me without complaint (I really needed it because I was alone). I never felt lonely at any moment. The explanations were really smooth and clear. I am truly 100% satisfied and I will recommend this to friends who will be visiting very soon.

We highly recommend this tour. Our guide Mo was extremely knowledgeable, encouraged questions, and shared deeply about the history, social frameworks, challenges and opportunities for South Africans in Johannesburg and Soweto. The highlight was lunch in a local establishment in Soweto and a tour of the Kliptown Youth Program among other important sites. It was sobering and inspiring.

This is a great tour if you only have a short time in the city. In this fun day tour you see all the highlights. John was a great guide and is so passionate about history and his country. We were only here for 48 hours but I really felt I got to know Johannesburg in the short time we were here. Thanks so much!

All about this experience was amazing. The van /car was super new and spotless clean! The places we visited gave a great speed knowledge about Johannesburg! They were great in the communication and having the opportunity to learn about the community was the highlight of it! But the best of all was the driver and tour guide Bo! He was perfect from start to end, from far one of the best guides along my extensive traveller experience! Great and clear in explaining the different nuances on the history , his story telling skills makes you really involved in the journey! Amazing also so learn a bit About his family and involvement in the community and all of this without having the feeling that he is doing his job for the tips! Quite the opposite you really feel that he loves what he does so tipping him becomes a pleasure as a warm thanks for the gained knowledge and unforgettable experience! Thank you Bo! I cant recommend you enough!

This private tour was fabulous & so worth the money! Only had one day in JoBurg & this was a great way to see the whole city. Included a stop for coffee, shopping & lunch along with all of the major sites. Our tour guide, Banele, was so knowledgeable & very hospitable. The van was very nice & clean - excellent transportation for the day. Highly recommend!

Super informative tour with Monwabisi who was a very engaging and passionate tour guide. He kept us so interested and has a fantastic breadth of knowledge. I found the Peterson Museum both impressive and so moving a d powerful. The Soweto visit to a family was humbling in the extreme and the work that the Kyptown Youth Project is just out of this world. The Director, Thulani was both inspiring and humble and it was a pleasure to meet him. Sai & Shanthi
