Black Desert
The Black Desert is a region of volcano-shaped and widely spaced mounds, distributed along about 30 km (19 mi) in western Egypt between the White Desert in the south and the Bahariya Oasis in the north. Most of its mounds are capped by basalt sills, giving them the characteristic black color.
Valley of Agabat
Agabat, known as the ‘Beautiful Valley’, is located in the Western Desert region of Egypt and generally is the stop off point for tourists on their way to Bahariya and the White/ Black Deserts. About a 4 hour 40 minute drive from Cairo and over 6 hours from Alexandria, the route will take you from the busy Cities into the peaceful and sparse lands into the desert regions with stunning views en route. There are no settlements at all in Agabat as the land is barren and extreme temperatures in the summer months would make living extremely harsh. Whilst Agabat is smaller and considered a small valley in comparison to the Bahariya area, it is nonetheless stunning in it’s own unique way. With beautiful mountain formations and many white cliff faces similar to the White Desert, it also immerses into the sand dunes linked alongside the Sahara Desert and unusual yellow limestone rocks. The sides of the mountains here are higher and steeper than the route leading to Bahariya and Farafra.
White Desert
The white desert is the most popular and interesting area in the Western Desert. The white desert became a protected area since 2002. It occupies a surface area of around three thousand kilometers. On the road that goes between Farafra and Baharya, one can see the first bizarre rock formation in the white desert. Some rocks look like animals, mushrooms, and some rocks have totally strange shapes, The famous and dramatic gleaming chalk landscape of the Farafra Depression is one of the most astounding natural wonders of Egypt. The strange rock formations that rise above the white surface of the desert are known as inselbergs (from the German for ‘island mountain, The rock layers were deposited when the desert was underwater and marine fauna which died settled at the bottom of the ocean forming sedimentary rocks. Viewing the sparkling white landscape covered with almost supernatural shapes spectacularly lit at dawn, midday and especially sunset there.

This was a fantastic experience. The driver-cum-Bedouin guide Mohammad was enthusiastic and kind, and went out of his way to make my experience as enjoyable as possible. He's a great cook, great driver, and a great singer too. He always made sure I'm comfortable. I booked a private experience, it was phenomenal (the drive from hotel to Bahariya base camp are in a group, the rest of the experiences, including oasis activities and overnight camping are private). The van driver from our hotels to the base camp was very polite, drove very safe, made appropriate rest stops. The road from Cairo to Bahariya itself is a smooth road, almost like any freeway in the US, except without lane markings. The white desert is something out of this world and a terrain that's probably the only one of its kind on the planet I think. The hot springs are naturally hot and pumped out of the ground, but filled in a tank. So, it's kind of like a small concrete kiddie pool. The night camping in the middle of the desert in solitude, sleeping under the stars was breathtaking. Only caveat is that, it can get pretty cold during winter nights (November to Feb). I did feel slightly uncomfortable, especially after midnight when it became super cold. Mohammed gave me huge blankets and sleeping bags, but it still was cold. Something to keep in mind if you are not cold-tolerant. Also, the stargazing may be a hit or miss depending on the phase of the moon and clouds. I saw a huge circle around the moon which I have never seen before. Especially in a huge desert with towering white mushroom rocks lit by the dim moonlight and a huge circle around the moon in the sky was thrilling. We started around 7 AM in the morning, finished the activities in Bahariya around 5-5:30 PM during sunset, pitched tent, ate dinner, and came back to Cairo around 2:30 PM the next day. Overall, a fantastic experience. I will recommend this tour to anyone.

Love the tour. Got to experience three unique deserts within in same same region. Got to learn how each desert got its unique formation. It was fun camping under the stars. The other activities were fun also.

The experience is so worth it! Mahmoud is an excellent guide and the so experienced in guiding people..he is calm and this only gives the confidence. The deserts are both amazing and will give you great views..at night we saw Milky Way and couldn't stop gazing at it. This is a typical camping so don't expect running water and shower but what you see will so so worth it. The trip starts with black crystal.mountaun, white desert and the black desert where you camp, although I'm being told that this is not alway the case- you might be camping at white desert. The group is being driven to rendezvous spot and then split in smaller grips into jeeps. The driver is also your guide, cook. We slep.u Der the starry sky and ot was unexpected but exiting addition to the whole trip. Be prepared for camping conditions, but enjoy as it a unique experience. I would highly recommend.

Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish! We were a small group of 5 which made the experience friendly and authentic. Our guide, Hazim, was exceptional: kind, attentive, funny, and really passionate about the desert. He took us to beautiful places in 4x4 and we even got to go sand boarding. He cooked us a delicious meal and tea around the campfire, and we were able to sleep under the stars in complete silence watching the starry sky and shooting stars. I recommend 100% this magical, simple and perfect experience.

Excellent organization, which is uncommon in Egypt. Everything was perfect: transportation, meals, comfortable camping. Mention to my guide Waheed, little care...

Great trip to the desert, clear communication from Amir on the trip details and we had a great local guide Hazem that drove us around in the desert. Highlight is the night under the stars. Made some stops on the drive from Cairo so you can buy snacks since it’s an early start.

We had a fantastic experience and very well organised. We had a local tour guide very professional, and knowledge, who made our experience unique. The camping location was in a stunning spot in the middle of the black desert and the food was very tasty. I wouldn't change anything and definitely would do it again!
