Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center
Alaska Wildlife Conservation center is Southcentral Alaska's # 1 visitor attraction. The Wildlife Conservation Center is a non profit sanctuary dedicated to preserving Alaska's wildlife through conservation, research, education and quality animal care. Visitors can expect to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the region and having the opportunity to observe a diverse array of native wildlife up close, including bears, wolves, moose, wolves and eagles, among others, in a spacious 200 acre carefully designed habitats that mimic their natural environment Its an unforgettable experience that fosters a deeper appreciation for Alaska's wildlife.
Portage Glacier
Brief stop in Portage Valley, where you will see several hanging Glaciers which once extended the entire length of the 14 mile valley. Portage glacier has receded back approximately 2 1/2 miles and has left behind a dead lake! The glacial remnants seen today are Explorer, Middle, Byron, Burns, and Shakespeare glaciers. While still massive in size, these glaciers stand as smaller reminders of the immense ice sheets that once covered this landscape. Next will be a walk through the rainforest, afterwards enjoy your ride back to Chugach State Park and marvel at the stunning views of Turnagain Arm.

Thoroughly enjoyed the experience including a stop to see salmon spawning in creek, hanging glaciers in Portage valley and especially the Wildlife Conservation Center where you get to see Alaska wildlife up close. 5.00We booked this tour as an alternative tour, due the weather, our tour guide Joan picked us up on time and we quickly got on the road, Joan is an Alaskan born and bred she informed us that she live totally of grid about 65 miles from Anchorage and trains Husky dogs for racing. Her local knowledge was excellent and gave us a great insight to the local landscape taking us up the Turnagain Arm (formerly Cook channel), going past places such as the Beluga point (stop to look for Beluga) and Bird point. During our tour we saw numerous Bald headed eagles and ducks, geese and other wild fowl and Ravens which are a protected species here in Alaska due to Native American tribal law. We visited the Animal Sanctuary which was well worth it as we able to get up close to Grizzly Bears and other wild life including Wolves, Muskox, Reindeer, Wood Bison and Moose. We then visited Portage Glacier, Joan told us that as a young child she would visit the glacier with her family on there weekly visits to Seward and throw stones at the ice to have it bounce back at them. Unfortunately due to global warming where they throw stones has now become a lake and you cannot see the rest of the Glacier as it is around the headland the only way to see it is by boat trip. On the whole this was an excellent guided tour with local knowledge by a person who has live their whole life in Alaska
