Hummingbird enthusiasts will be in awe at this hidden gem in the Maracas Valley. The home of a local couple has been transformed into a magnificent nature sanctuary for these mystifying birds. The haven is named appropriately as Yerette is the Amerindian word for hummingbird.
Against the background of the silk cotton trees, orchids, ferns and shrubs, you will have the opportunity to have a close up experience. Enjoy a tea or meal on the grounds as you watch the dance of the birds. The couple’s photography and art gallery has an abundant collection of their works. We then take you on an amazing trip into the Caroni Swamp. Going through a maze of waterways in a mangrove swamp considered to be the best in the Western Hemisphere, you can get the opportunity to experience species of mammals, reptiles crustacean life, and unique mangrove vegetation and many of the 186 species of bird wildlife present in the Sanctuary. This tour takes you to both Yerette And Caroni. I loved both places. This review is of the tour service that takes you to these two locations. I had a reservation with them the morning after we were flying in. Late the night before they canceled our reservation, leaving us zero time to reschedule something. We actually employed our taxi driver to take us to these two places successfully. I found out later that day about the service reviewed here that we had contracted through Viator. The owner had passed away 3 weeks earlier, and whoever was running it now They just canceled my tour because they got a bigger tour that wanted to go at a different time - so they just drop me. I found that out because my taxi driver is one of the people that the late owner would typically call when he needed to split a tour for two different times.

The garden environment absolutely lived up to expectations with numerous hummingbird hotspots dotted around. A very peaceful and welcoming feel as hoped for. However, due to technology issues we could not watch the promised video which would have been a nice reprise from the two and a half hour lecture. They are obviously very knowledgeable and passionate about what they’re doing but we ended up not having much time to be able to actually walk around the garden due to the length of the talk. It felt a little too much like being back at school - a little condescending. The light lunch was soup and salad and was very tasty. The souvenirs were a little overpriced but the scenery was beautiful and there was water, coffee, and tea provided as well as accessible facilities.

I could have stayed and watched the hummingbirds all day. This tour was the highlight of my trip to Trinidad. I share stories of the experience as often as I can and encourage people to visit for the education, home cooked meal and friendship. You will want an experienced guide and driver to get to the house. Mine was both.
