There is the option to take a break in Skun, affectionately known as Spiderville Cambodia, the popular place for Cambodian and foreign travelers where it is possible to taste the local delicacy of tarantula fried and other fried insects. We make a short stop to amaze you around this market in Spider Town, you can also try various seasonal local fruits from the region and islands in the Mekong River. However, if you don’t want to taste spider, cricket, scorpion, grasshopper or other insects, this is also a good place to take pictures.
Kampong Kdei
This was an ancient Angkor route and we stop at Kampong Kdei to see one of the ancient Angkor bridges built in the 12th century. Spean Praptos or local resident called Dragon Bridge, it has over 20 arches and is a spectacular sight, reinforcing the impression that the Khmers were like the Romans of Southeast Asia. The bridge is in good condition and looks impressive.
Tonle Sap Lake
Next, we will travel to the typical Khmer village of Kompong Khleang where you visit to one of the largest and least visited villages on the Great Tonle Sap Lake. You’ll take a wooden boat to the village where you will get a glimpse of daily life in Cambodia, discover an amazing and different way of life in the largest freshwater. You get a fascinating insight into local life by exploring the stilt houses which, during the dry season, are 8m high, but during the rainy season they are only about 1 or 2 meter above water level. Explore the beautiful landscape of the flooded mangrove forest and learn about this incredible natural flood barrier. In the village where animals, pigs, dogs, chickens, ducks and of course humans live, all competing for space in this incredible floating villages. This is a unique experience offering a great outdoor adventure in the countryside of Siem Reap, it is definitely one of the highlights of a Cambodia holiday.
Angkor Wat
Today we will meet in the hotel lobby at 4:45am and travel to see Angkor Wat at Sunrise, the temple is considered the largest religious building in the world and is truly one of the wonders of the world. Believed to have been built as a temple and mausoleum for King Suryavarman II during the height of the Khmer Empire in the first half of the 12th century, Angkor Wat is the best preserved of the Angkorian temples. The central monument represents the mythical Mount Meru, the sacred mountain at the center of the universe, which was home to the Hindu god Vishnu.
Ta Prohm Temple
We return to the hotel for a breakfast and you can take some rest. After that, we travel to visit the jungle temple of Ta Prohm, the temple is unique in that it is overgrown by jungle trees and vines, with many parts of the temple crumbling to the ground. This makes the ‘Tomb Raider Temple’ one of the most picturesque and memorable of the Angkor temples. Then, we visit Giant Pyramid of Takeo, one of the highest temples in the Angkor area.
Angkor Thom Temple
We head to Angkor Thom, first the ancient city of Angkor Thom. It was the last capital of the Great Khmer Empire under the reign of Jayavarman VII. This city is surrounded by an 8 m high wall drawing a perfect square. You will enter the city from the ancient South Gate, an impressive stone gate carved with Elephants and four giant faces.
Bayon Temple
And our highlight is the enigmatic and enchanting Temple of Bayon. The 54 towers are each crowned with the four faces of Avalokiteshvara (Buddha of Compassion), which bear more than a passing resemblance to the king himself – Visit Baphuon, one of Angkor’s most beautiful temples from the 11th century. It was extensively renovated by the French and is now open to the public again – continue along the Terrace of Elephants – visit at the Terrace of the Leper King.
