What a fantastic class by Mei. She taught us so much about the history and the art of Japanese calligraphy. We had lots of time to practice and even got a scroll with our final piece of artwork on. Highly recommend this class to anyone who would like a truly authentic and incredibly knowledgeable teacher on calligraphy. Thank you so much Mei. Our artwork will be going up in the house when we get home.

If you are at all interested in traditional crafts and art, language, or Buddhism, this calligraphy workshop is an excellent way to spend part of your day in Tokyo. Possibly because of when I went (first weekday after the new years holiday), I ended up having a private lesson since no one else booked the experience. Mei was an excellent teacher! She was very knowledgeable about the history of calligraphy as well as the spiritual and philosophical background. She was of course also very skilled at calligraphy itself. As a teacher, she was patient and did a good job explaining what to do. I have pretty terrible handwriting at baseline so I appreciated her patience. I learned a lot and by the end I was able to write a reasonably okay Kanji on a scroll to take home. For solo travelers like myself, I think this is a good activity. I was a little worried when I realized I was the only person signed up, especially since I tend to be socially anxious, but my anxiety went away fast and I had a great time! I think this would also be fun to do with a group. I did this on my last full day in Japan and it was a lovely way to end my trip. I will remember this experience for a long time.

I didn't know what to expect. I learned historical context. I had a lot of fun practicing different stokes. (Slow down more.) Next I could select a word to practice, and finally created my first piece of calligraphy art including my name for the signature.

The workshop was very wholesome, Mei was really nice and explained a lot about the history of calligraphy. She gave a really nice introduction describing the different characters which are used. The room itself was calm and peaceful and there was lots of time to practice! In the end we walked away with our own crafted artwork which Mei finished with beautiful stamps. All in all a great experience!

This was an excellent two hour private calligraphy experience. The staff were very knowledgeable, polite and friendly; it was a good value for money (it only cost 10,000 yen for two people); and the insights into Japanese culture were invaluable. We recommend signing up to anyone interested in learning more about shodo.

The experience was amazing, immersive, Mei is adorable and teaches us the history of calligraphy before practice. A fun and friendly activity to do alone, as a couple or as a family for a tangible memory to bring home!

Mei was very enthusiastic about calligraphy and teaching about the history and practice. We enjoyed trying our hand at creating the different strokes and then applying it to writing a chosen character with personal meaning. I thought it was an enriching experience for my entire family.

Mei was a fantastic instructor very patient and knowledgeable. We loved the class and Mei encouraged us to just get stuck in and have a go and helped direct us as we went so we had plenty of time to practice before doing our final piece. The environment was lovely and easy to find. We will definitely head back for a tea ceremony and other classes before we leave.
