Acropolis
The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. The word acropolis is from the Greek words ἄκρον (akron, "highest point, extremity") and πόλις (polis, "city"). The term acropolis is generic and there are many other acropoleis in Greece. While there is evidence that the hill was inhabited as far back as the fourth millennium BC, it was Pericles (c. 495–429 BC) in the fifth century BC who coordinated the construction of the buildings whose present remains are the site's most important ones, including the Parthenon, the Propylaea, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. The Parthenon and the other buildings were seriously damaged during the 1687 siege by the Venetians during the Morean War when gunpowder being stored in the Parthenon by the Ottomans was hit by a cannonball and exploded.

A half day tour of Athens with Nikos. Saw all the major spots, including changing of the guards at the Parliament building on Sunday. Spent as much time as I needed at each site; Nikos suggested others of interest. I recommend this for new visitors.

Our driver/guide, George Remoundos, arrived at our hotel exactly on time. He was very interesting and very attentive. We were his only passengers so we're lucky to have his full attention for a wonderful experience. It was like being upgraded to first class! He dropped us off with very good instructions on how to find him when we were done and ready to travel to the next adventure. Thank you George and thank you Viator for a memory that makes us feel special.

Alex was great and showed us all around Athens. He was on time and picked us up at our hotel, communications were excellent. He made sure we had the best vantage point to watch the changing of the guard along with a very detailed description of the significance of their uniforms and movements. He made sure we were at the Parthenon at the time of our tickets, gave us plenty of time to enjoy every stop. We could not have had a better experience.

Our half-day tour of Athens was fantastic and just what we wanted. Our driver Bill picked us up at our hotel and navigated the busy streets, giving us plenty of time at each site. We spent time at the major sites including the Acropolis, the ancient Agora, the changing of the guards at Syntagma Square, Mt Lycabettus, Monastiraki Square, the Panathenaic Stadium, and more. This was a perfect way to see Athens!
