Mendenhall Glacier
Enjoy a narrated transfer to the spectacular Mendenhall Glacier and its Visitor Center, where a ranger can satisfy your curiosity about the natural wonders there. Roam the grounds, snap photos, take in the interactive exhibits and have the chance to watch bears feast on salmon.
From Mendenhall Glacier, we’ll take you to Auke Bay where you’ll board our state-of-the-art, 48-passenger jet boat custom designed for Juneau whale watching. It has extra-large windows, and an outside viewing deck. Juneau has a healthy humpback whale population with some 65 whales returning each season to feed in the nutrient-rich waters, and our boat captains are experts at locating them. We guarantee whale sightings; if there are no whales during your cruise, we'll refund $100 to each adult and $50 for children. Your captain will let you know when whales are spotted, but it’s likely you'll first hear a collective chorus of "Oohhs!" and "Ahhs!" from your fellow adventurers as they witness a giant humpback suddenly breach. Binoculars are available for your use onboard. Venture out on the deck to enjoy a panoramic view of your surroundings or to take a photo, or settle into your warm, comfortable interior surroundings to enjoy the scenery and wildlife sightings through the oversized windows.

Jackson, the naturalist and Max, our capt, were great.. accommodating and going out of their way to ensure our whale watching opportunity wasn't a bust, even at the end of Alaska cruise season. Carina was a great guide to the whale watching, glacier and salmon bake. Would definitely use their services again.

This tour blew our minds. We got to see 50-60 whales in one spot, the Glacier was incredible and we got to walk down Nugget Trail to a huge waterfall, and the salmon bake was to die for. The salmon was the best we've ever had, plus they had ribs, clam chowder, and more. Highly recommend this tour, it was better than we thought it would be, and we knew it would be the highlight of our trip!

Organized tour. Easy to get to right off of our cruise dock. Captain Lee and Carol the naturalist made for a fun and informative whale watching. Highly recommend.

We did the best of Juneau tour and it was an enjoyable outing. We started out whale watching and our naturalist, Jackson did a great job sharing about the wildlife and ecosystem. Our boat Captain Max was top notch too! We then went to Mendenhall Glacier and made the 2 mi round trip hike to see nugget falls at the suggestion of our bus driver Corrina (excellent driver and guide). It was beautiful!! It was just a very tight schedule. Only an hour at the glacier so it was a very quick turnaround to make it back in time. Next we headed to the salmon bake and the food was pretty good. Overall, it was a good experience. It made for a long, but enjoyable day out in Juneau.

Overall, this tour was wonderful and a highlight of our trip! Our group of five adults had a fantastic time and were constantly wowed by the beauty of Alaska. The whale-watching tour with Claire and Jenn was unforgettable – they were knowledgeable, personable, and made the experience so much fun. The scenery was stunning, and being out on the water and seeing whales was a true “Alaska moment.” The self-guided tour at Mendenhall Glacier was also beautiful, though it felt very rushed. You only get about an hour, which doesn’t leave much time if you choose to hike to the waterfalls. I highly recommend making the trek, though – it’s a 20–30 minute walk each way, but absolutely worth it to stand right next to the majestic falls. Just note that you’ll only get a few minutes to enjoy it before needing to turn back, so be prepared to walk briskly. The salmon bake was set in a gorgeous rainforest location that looked like a wedding venue with beautiful decorations. The atmosphere was relaxed, with live background music at the perfect volume. You can start eating right away, and after the meal we had fun with gold panning (we even found a few small flakes!), visited the nearby waterfall, and finished the evening by roasting marshmallows around the fire pit. A few things to note: -You don’t get snacks or lunch included earlier in the day, so eat a hearty breakfast or bring snacks for the glacier hike. You’ll definitely be well-fed at the salmon bake, so don’t overdo it, but you’ll need some energy for the afternoon. -The rushed timing at the glacier was the biggest downside. Just 30 more minutes there would have made it perfect. -My biggest personal disappointment was with the vegetarian options. Despite filling out the dietary form, calling 72 hours ahead as instructed, and confirming with the office, no vegetarian meal was available when I arrived. When I asked, I was told repeatedly that I “needed to request ahead of time,” which I had done exactly as asked. After emailing about the issue, I was once again told that I needed to request ahead of time, by the same people I had been requesting to! After telling them that, I never received a follow-up, or an apology or at least just an answer to tell me what else more I could have done. That left me feeling ignored, like I was some annoying pesky customer that whines about my dietary restrictions. But they’re the ones who asked! It was dismissive given the effort I put in to follow all their instructions. If they had just not asked if we had dietary restrictions, then I would have assumed I’d not have options (as it IS called a Salmon Bake) and I could have brought my own food or planned ahead better. I also paid a lot for my family and I to go on this tour, would be nice to be treated better by the company. My family did love the salmon, ribs, beans, and salad, but the only things I could eat were cornbread (dry and sweet) and coleslaw (also very sweet). That said, overall this tour was amazing – mostly because it made my dad so happy. Visiting Alaska has been his dream for 70 years, and this experience was the perfect way to kick off our trip.

The whale watch with Captain Lee and Jack was one of the highlights of my cruise aboard Holland America Koningsdam. Excellent excursion, would highly recommend.
