The archaeological site of Cañada de la Virgen is located just 25 kilometers West of San Miguel de Allende. Occupied between 540 and 1050 a.d., it is perched upon a small mesa surrounded by canyons and is made up of four patio/pyramid complexes, an ancient artificial pond and a ceremonial causeway covering the 16 hectares that is now government property. You will walk a total of approximately 2 miles (3 kilometers) within approximately 2 hours in order for your tour to encompass all of the archaeological sites
It is recommended that you bring a hat; sunblock; bottled water --although included; comfortable, well padded walking shoes or sneakers
Note: No bags or backpacks will be allowed into the site. Small camera bags, cameras and water are OK. Bags can be left in our vehicle or with site staff at the visitor's center

What To Expect
Canada de la Virgen
The best way to visit the site of Cañada de la Virgen is with a team of expert guides. The site is located just 25 kilometers West of San Miguel de Allende and you will see it along highly specialized guides who will share their knowledge of the Otomi people and of other cultures of the Bajio region, as well as the Mesoamerican cultures in general. You will be able to leisurely walk a total of approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) within approximately 2 hours. This way your tour will encompass all of the archaeological site. You will leave with a more thorough knowledge of this wonderful, historical site.

Worth the visit if in San Miguel. Easy to get to. Not expensive 80 pesos plus tip for the guide. Great pictures.

5.00Amazing pyramid and group of 5 buildings/temples. Well preserved and just uncovered in 1995. Short 40 minute drive from the center of Historic center of San Miguel . Not busy, our group of 4 and a couple from Chicago that took a taxi out. You leave your car in a parking lot and board a bus that run every hour. Bus drops you a Kilometer from the sight and you walk up a modest incline. Wear comfy shoes. A guide takes you and tells of the areas and what they were used for. Spanish only, but good signage in English and Spanish. You get to walk the entire sight with the guide and climb the pyramid.

5.00It was a great experience. We learned so much about the site and it was great to even be able to climb the temple and get a panoramic view of the area. Lino was a friendly, knowledgeable tour guide that took the time to answer all our questions. We would definitely book again with with this tour company.

5.00Horatio was my guide for the entire day. His knowledge and broad spectrum of the pyramid really made the excursion that much better. He was very patient with me as we walked up and down the pyramid steps. And, add the meal to your trip. It’s home cooked food and absolutely delicious. .

4.00Be ready to walk uphill and wear comfy shoes, sunblock , hat and or long sleeves. Can’t take any bags with you but they have lockers if you do take a bag. It’s a small site but awesome to visit and learn about. You get to climb the restored steps/parts. If you opt for the ranch style lunch , you get a simple but tasty home cooked meal in someone’s backyard with farm animals, not too far from the site. Worth going to if you’re in SMDA.

2.00The place is amazing but the staff members were very rude and grumpy since we arrived, from the person who directed us and gave us some information where to park our car to the person who took us to the archeological site. My sister in law had a word with the guide chap because he was quite rude and grumpy. I don’t think people like him would be working in a place like that. No English spoken or whatsoever. Despite all the issues we had we enjoyed our visit.
Bring water and walking shoes. Our tour did not offer water and didn’t tells us water was for sale at the meeting place

4.00We throughly enjoyed the tour. Our guide, Horitio was extremely knowledgeable and easy to understand. The climb on the pyramids was a highlight. The view was panoramic! One item to note, we weren’t told there was 2 mile round trip to and from the pyramids. Make sure you bring water and good walking shoes!! One negative was the air conditioning in the van did not work and the van was dirty.

1.00Tour was canceled with no prior notice until we arrived at Canton Adventures at 9 am. The tour guide was supposedly in a traffic accident the night before and unable to make it - we hoped he was ok but learned no details. There was time to notify us, staff agreed, but no notification was sent. We were very disappointed since this was a much anticipated part of our trip.
