Turku Cathedral
Turku (Åbo) is the oldest city in Finland, and a former center of commerce going back as far as the 13th century. Turku was the capital of Finland until 1812, when the Russian emperor decided to move the capital to Helsinki, closer to Russia. Turku is the residence of the Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran church. During the excursion we will visit the main church of Finland, Turku Cathedral, where daily worship takes place. The cathedral is considered one of the most valuable architectural monuments in the country.
Turku Castle
The fortress of Turku Castle has stood at the edge of the river Aura since the 1280’s. During its history it has been a defensive bastion, a majestic court, an administrative center, a prison, a storehouse and a barracks. Nowadays the castle is a must-visit tourist attraction in Finland. The halls and chambers of the castle have witnessed major turning points and dramatic events in history – from the misfortunes of incarcerated prisoners to royal visitors and the elegance of court life. The comprehensive exhibition of Turku Castle presents the castle’s history up to the present day. The elegant rooms of the Bailey are styled with period furniture, costumes and treasures from the museum’s collection. In the Children’s Castle’s Knight’s Hall kids can dress as princesses or knights and step into the world of a medieval court. Additionally, the Children’s Castle includes the Castle Workshop, the Mini-court and the Castle-Elf’s treasure chamber.

Let’s start with good… we loved Turku. Everyone should visit there. Saw the cathedral, the castle, and breezed through the parking lot of the maritime museum. Ended at the market. The transfer to and from the hotel was great. Ended at the market in Turku and had to walk a mile plus to the train back to Helsinki. Be prepared to walk! Also be sure to eat and bring snacks and water for yourself. Our tour guide has difficulty with English translation so I feel we may have missed out on quite a bit and also our time went over so long, we had 30 minutes to grab a bite to eat and then had to walk back to the train. We had hoped to have more time on our own in Turku. The time of the event changed the night before and has I not accessed my email I would have never known. So for the price, we was a little disappointed. We loved Turku and hope to return on our own sometime later.

My family and I truly enjoyed this tour! Every detail of the day was pre-organized and it was such a delight. We were picked up from our hotel for the train ride from Helsinki to Turku and our guide picked us up right at the station. We then took a car to the castle for a guided tour. My family and I loved the castle and could have easily spent more time inside exploring. It’s quite large and has such a long history. The building is beautifully preserved and was so cool to see! After the castle we took a short walk along the water for a quick glimpse of the ships and the maritime museum. Finally our guide and driver brought us to old town Turku to see the church. We had a chance to walk around the streets and opted to walk back to the train station for our return home where the driver in Helsinki was waiting to shuttle us home. Our tour guide was lovely. She is so knowledgeable and shared a lot of interesting history about the castle and the city of Turku, so we all had a lot of fun! I highly recommend this tour.
