We all really enjoyed our trip to see the gannets. Trevor our guide gave a great commentary full of interesting facts, history and maori legends. Even though I'm a New Zealander I learnt quite a lot that I didn't know! The colony is on a spectacular cliff top and the birds are really fascinating to watch. Well worth it!

This afternoon we enjoyed seeing the Art Deco architecture of downtown Napier, New Zealand, which had been largely destroyed by an earthquake and subsequent fires in 1931. Then we took a wonderful tour to Cape Kidnappers with Gannet Safaris Overland. Our guide, Carlos, is a transplanted Yankee who has lived in New Zealand for over 40 years, and he told us a great deal about the area, the bird sanctuary, and the gannet colonies. We visited the largest colony, of 2,500 breeding pairs along with their fluffy chicks. Our videos captured the sight & sound, but not the aroma. Don't miss this tour if you're in Napier !!

I was lucky with the weather and was able to admire the bass dupes up close. The tour guide through Jan was perfect and very informative.

Wow! The tour was extremely interesting:it doesn't just focus on the birds: all sorts of very interesting information about forestry, the land, other wildlife and a dramatic rescue story. But, of course, the gannets are the highlight! Very impressive birds: the sheer size of the colony, their long flights starting at the clifftop, all the chicks and their parents - and, of course, a cheeky seagull here and there. Would recommend - although I'd recommend you do it before the chicks are grown and fly away. :-D

Our guide was a knowledgeable local, as they all are, and entertained us with interesting and funny stories the whole way, and information about flora and fauna and history. I would recommend this trip for anyone interested in the environment, outdoors, animals and plants.

My husband and I were return visitors having previously enjoyed this tour. We took friends with us who had not been before. The tour was as interesting, educational and enjoyable as the last time and our friends were equally impressed. The trip through the farm, the history, the environmental work and of course viewing and observing the Gannet’s was outstanding from start to finish. Thoroughly enjoyable way to spend our afternoon in Hawke’s Bay.

In the UK, we have the only mainland breeding colonies of northern Gannets at Bempton Cliffs, but the colony is spread vertically down the 100m cliff. At Cape Kidnappers, the colony is at the same level as you, the birdwatcher, are. There are also gannets taking off and coming into land at head height and almost within touching distance. A truly wonderful experience. Marcus was an entertaining and informative guide with a good line in patter and a great sense of humour.
