Isle of Lewis was our next cruise stop after Orkney island, and while in Orkney you could kind of find your way to the historical sites with a public bus, in this island you best bet is to join a local tour if you want to see all the interesting sites including the Callanish Standing Stones, the Carloway Broch, the Arnol Blackhouse and the northern tip of the island, the Butt of Lewis - all within a day! There were not many tours (excluding private tours) that covered what we wanted and at the end, we settled for Hebridean Isle Tours. We got Eric to drive us around as Hugh could not make it due to some family issues. He picked us up from the new Deep Water terminal (saved us from taking the shuttle to town) and we took our time to go through the places and got back well before the cruise ship's departure time. Eric was a talkative guide and gave us detailed information and rich background on the sights we visited, especially on the Blackhouse where he explained how the people lived there then. Overall I think the tour was worthwhile if you don't drive and only have a day there. It allowed me to see all these unique places. (and yes, you could stand next to one of the many standing stones, unlike in stone henge) PS they operate in small groups of 8, so book early if you come with a cruise as I am sure others will be booking as well.

Gordon was a local guide with an intimate knowledge of the island. He was friendly with a great sense of humour. A great tour which included the prehistoric sites, an old Scottish village, traditional thatched houses, a small museum and the lighthouse. Overall it was a very good tour and we drove through beautiful country on this scenic island.

The difference between this excursion and the excursions offered by our cruise ship are night and day. Instead of a measly 2 1/2 hours, we toured the Isle of Lewis from 10:00 am until after 4:00 pm. Eric was very mindful of bathroom breaks and special side trips that added so much to the experience. Vehicle was comfortable in the views out the windows were incredible.

Thank you, Christian, for stepping in and making our visit to Stornaway memorable. We did not know about your many Neolithic treasures and how accessible they are.

We had some confusion for the meet-up time in the morning, but this was minor as the tour was great. Gordon was an excellent guide and was dressed sharply in his kilt. We got to see the majority of the sights on the island, including the Butt of Lewis lighthouse in the north, the Black house of Arnol, several beaches, Carloway Broch, Callendish stones and several other sites. Stopped for lunch and had toasties and lamb burgers at a good restaurant stand and had a bag piper play Scottish tunes under the giant jaw bone of a blue whale! All in all, a great excursion.

Our shore time on the Isle of Lewis was limited to 6.5 hrs (UK immigration checked all 3,000 passengers delaying going ashore by 3 hrs) and without the efficient work of our guide we would have missed some of the highlights of the Island. We got to see everything described in the excursion description plus a couple hidden gems. Overall, very pleased with Hebridean Isle Tours.

Hugh treated us to an informative, detailed, and altogether lovely tour of the island. We appreciated his knowledge of the area and its history, his enthusiam, and his sense of humor. I highly recommend this tour and would definitely contact Hugh again if/when we go back to Lewis and Harris.
