Welcome to Gwangju — a city that rose up in 1980 and became a symbol of Korea’s struggle for democracy: the May 18 Democratic Uprising.
As a local guide born and raised in this very city, I am honored to share this powerful chapter of our past with you.
May 18 was a courageous stand by the people of Gwangju who fought against military dictatorship and demanded democracy. Despite facing overwhelming force, the citizens of Gwangju rose up, and their sacrifice became a turning point in South Korea’s path toward democracy.
Join me on this tour to gain a deeper understanding of the May Spirit — the spirit of resistance, sacrifice, sharing, and solidarity that united citizens during those ten historic days — and together, let’s reflect on the sacrifices that continue to shape Gwangju and the nation today.
The May 18 Democratic Uprising was listed as a UNESCO Memory of the World in 2011.
