Join your host Putu in her kitchen for a private, hands-on cooking class. Unlike many other TripAdvisor tours, this is a private experience. You and your host will prepare 2-3 authentic Balinese dishes. As you chop, grind and grill, Putu will teach you about the spices she uses in her family recipes as well as the medicinal qualities of Balinese ingredients.

Putu's kitchen is simple, with only a two-burner cooktop but you will be impressed by the speed and fluidity with which she prepares a complex menu with multiple dishes. You will taste a variety of authentic dishes with potential ones being Putu’s grilled eggplant with tomato, grilled fish with Balinese sambal (chili sauce), a curry dish (either chicken, fish or vegetarian) or perhaps a variety of pepes (foods seasoned with local spices, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed). You can expect the cooking lesson to last about 1-2 hours before you sit down and enjoy the delicious meal you helped prepare with your host and her family.

What To Expect

Join Putu in her home kitchen for a private, hands-on Balinese cooking class held in her ancestral village in Ubud, nestled among lush gardens and tropical orchards. You’ll be warmly welcomed by her multigenerational family before preparing five authentic dishes together, using fresh ingredients harvested from her own farm. As you chop, grind, and grill, Putu will share stories behind her family recipes, the vibrant spices she uses, and the healing properties of traditional Balinese ingredients, most of which come straight from her own farm. Her kitchen may be simple, with just a two-burner cooktop, but you’ll be amazed by the ease and grace with which she brings complex flavors to life. Your meal will be accompanied by their family’s homegrown rice, cultivated by Putu’s grandparents who are rice farmers. Beyond cooking, Putu offers warm insights into Balinese Hinduism and local life, all with a great sense of humor that makes the experience both meaningful and fun. Your class lasts about 1.5 hours and ends with a shared meal of everything you’ve prepared. It’s perfect for food lovers and curious travelers looking for a deeper, hands-on connection to Balinese culture and cuisine.

Wow, what an unforgettable experience! Without a doubt, this has been the highlight of our trip so far. Puta was like a magician in the kitchen, not only an incredible cook but also a brilliant teacher. She guided us through every step with patience and warmth, and by the end, we had the most delicious meal we've had in Bali. It honestly put the restaurant meals to shame, and that's saying a lot. She welcomed us so generously into her home, showing us around her beautiful temples and garden, where she grows most of the ingredients we used. It was such a personal, authentic experience. If you're considering this cooking class, just do it. You absolutely won’t regret it!

My friend and I had an absolutely fantastic lunch experience at this traditional Balinese cooking class. Putu and her sister were exceptional hosts and wonderful teachers. We learned so much as she opened up her home to us, and then expertly guided us through making five delicious Balinese dishes. The convenience of the pick-up and drop-off service was a great bonus, and we really appreciated their flexibility. It felt truly special to be invited into Putu's home, where she generously showed us her garden and where all the fresh, vibrant ingredients for our meal came from. This personal touch made the experience even more memorable. Putu kindly shared her recipes with us afterwards, and I'm so excited to try and recreate these amazing dishes when I get back home. I highly recommend this cooking class to anyone looking for an authentic and enriching culinary experience near Ubud!

We were picked up and taken to the home of Putu, where we were totally involved in cooking fabulous Indonesian food. Most of the food was grown on the small holding and was fresh and delicious. We used traditional methods- steaming rice over wood burning stove, grinding ingredients by hand to make satay, and lots of chopping on wood blocks with small cleavers. Putu was informative and gave lots of background information. Everything was beautifully clean and well organised. We all loved it. And the food was delicious!

Putu and her family opened their home to us, provided safe transportation to and from our villa, and were so kind and welcoming. Putu helped explain the layout of a traditional Balinese home, showed us her home and her home temple, and helped us learn about the special ceremonies happening the week we were in Bali. Putu, her cousin, and her husband were all so kind throughout the whole experience. Getting to learn to cook 5 Balinese dishes all from ingredients grown from Putu’s family garden was a highlight of our time in Bali. HIGHLY recommend doing this if you are in Ubud! Some of the most delicious food we’ve had in Bali, and a lovely way to experience Balinese culture from local people :).
