Join your host Putu in her kitchen for a private, hands-on cooking class. Unlike many other TripAdvisor tours, this is a private experience. You and your host will prepare 2-3 authentic Balinese dishes. As you chop, grind and grill, Putu will teach you about the spices she uses in her family recipes as well as the medicinal qualities of Balinese ingredients.
Putu's kitchen is simple, with only a two-burner cooktop but you will be impressed by the speed and fluidity with which she prepares a complex menu with multiple dishes. You will taste a variety of authentic dishes with potential ones being Putu’s grilled eggplant with tomato, grilled fish with Balinese sambal (chili sauce), a curry dish (either chicken, fish or vegetarian) or perhaps a variety of pepes (foods seasoned with local spices, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed). You can expect the cooking lesson to last about 1-2 hours before you sit down and enjoy the delicious meal you helped prepare with your host and her family.

Join Putu in her home kitchen for a private, hands-on Balinese cooking class held in her ancestral village in Ubud, nestled among lush gardens and tropical orchards. You’ll be warmly welcomed by her multigenerational family before preparing five authentic dishes together, using fresh ingredients harvested from her own farm. As you chop, grind, and grill, Putu will share stories behind her family recipes, the vibrant spices she uses, and the healing properties of traditional Balinese ingredients, most of which come straight from her own farm. Her kitchen may be simple, with just a two-burner cooktop, but you’ll be amazed by the ease and grace with which she brings complex flavors to life. Your meal will be accompanied by their family’s homegrown rice, cultivated by Putu’s grandparents who are rice farmers. Beyond cooking, Putu offers warm insights into Balinese Hinduism and local life, all with a great sense of humor that makes the experience both meaningful and fun. Your class lasts about 1.5 hours and ends with a shared meal of everything you’ve prepared. My second cooking class with Putu and again it was brilliant! The atmosphere, the food and of course the people, were fantastic. I love how it’s a private class, so you’re not there with strangers, just you and your friends. Highly recommend ♥️🙏

So much to say!! Putu has a beautiful spirit, family, and home! We loved every minute of the class! From the pickup to the drop off. The class took about 2 hrs and you’re able to to make your food to your liking! We like salty and spicy and was able to get everything just like we like it. I love to cook, mom doesn’t like to cook as much anymore, younger sister is spoiled but we put her to work! It was perfect for all stages of cooks lol. Best food we had in Bali!! Talk about fresh ingredients?!? Sis went to her garden to get our ingredients and the chicken was slaughtered that morning for us 🥹 Can’t wait to come back and try new food! Will definitely be making Balinese food here in Texas 😌 thanks for the recipes!! 🙏🏿

One of the best experiences we have had as travellers over many decades. This is for anyone who wants a great cooking class AND wants to learn about Balinese culture, religion and daily life. We were picked up, on time, by Putu and her husband Pasta (yes - Pasta) from our accommodation. The drive was interesting, travelling from Ubud through a rural landscape to their small village (150 close-knit families). Pasta is a calm and skilled driver. When we arrived Putu showed us all the buildings that make up her familiy's area. These include ceremonial places. She described the function of each and the various Hindu Gods represented in their temple. Then to the cooking: Putu took us through several techniques and helped us to prepare a multi-course, delicious meal, which we ate at the end of the session. (Made, her assistant was on hand to help if needed). As we grated, grilled, chopped, mixed and boiled, Putu happily answered all of our questions about Bali, the village and anything else we were interested in. Cooking in a kitchen, with a roof, but mainly open to tbe sides was wonderful, especially when the rain pounded on the roof! The gardens - a farm really - were all around us and it is amazing how many types of fruit, vegetables and roots (and rice of course) that Putu's family grow. Putu showed us around the grounds before we started cooking) After eating Putu and Pasta drove us back to Ubud. Anyone coming to within reach of Putu's class should sign up - it is both a culinary and cultural experience! Many thanks to Putu! We learned so much. By the way: Putu also has an AirBNB in the village. It is called Rumah Pondok Kembar (maybe Pondak, not Pondak - my photo has a leaf over the word!)

Putu and her family were so welcoming and gave us an amazing experience at her home showing us how a Balinese traditional house looks like and the customs. Her cooking class was so enjoyable and educational, we learned so much about the different ingredients and how to prepare the 5 dishes we made for dinner. We got to grate coconut by hand, mince our ingredients on the volcanic rock pestle and mortar with good arm strength, steamed our rice the proper way over a wood fired stove, cooked and turned our own chicken satay sticks over the hot coals and lastly ate the most delicious food! There is a lot of food to eat so you must come hungry! This is so worth it compared to the other group cooking classes around, a much more thorough and personal experience.
