Join your host Putu in her kitchen for a private, hands-on cooking class. Unlike many other TripAdvisor tours, this is a private experience. You and your host will prepare 2-3 authentic Balinese dishes. As you chop, grind and grill, Putu will teach you about the spices she uses in her family recipes as well as the medicinal qualities of Balinese ingredients.

Putu's kitchen is simple, with only a two-burner cooktop but you will be impressed by the speed and fluidity with which she prepares a complex menu with multiple dishes. You will taste a variety of authentic dishes with potential ones being Putu’s grilled eggplant with tomato, grilled fish with Balinese sambal (chili sauce), a curry dish (either chicken, fish or vegetarian) or perhaps a variety of pepes (foods seasoned with local spices, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed). You can expect the cooking lesson to last about 1-2 hours before you sit down and enjoy the delicious meal you helped prepare with your host and her family.

What To Expect

Join Putu in her home kitchen for a private, hands-on Balinese cooking class held in her ancestral village in Ubud, nestled among lush gardens and tropical orchards. You’ll be warmly welcomed by her multigenerational family before preparing five authentic dishes together, using fresh ingredients harvested from her own farm. As you chop, grind, and grill, Putu will share stories behind her family recipes, the vibrant spices she uses, and the healing properties of traditional Balinese ingredients, most of which come straight from her own farm. Her kitchen may be simple, with just a two-burner cooktop, but you’ll be amazed by the ease and grace with which she brings complex flavors to life. Your meal will be accompanied by their family’s homegrown rice, cultivated by Putu’s grandparents who are rice farmers. Beyond cooking, Putu offers warm insights into Balinese Hinduism and local life, all with a great sense of humor that makes the experience both meaningful and fun. Your class lasts about 1.5 hours and ends with a shared meal of everything you’ve prepared. This was an amazing experience for us. Putu and her husband, Pasta, were very accommodating with our pickup and drop-off. Upon arrival, Putu showed us around her home and explained the cultural significance of each section, including the temple and the meaning behind every statue. She then showed us her garden, where she grows a variety of herbs, spices, fruits, and vegetables. Notably, all the ingredients we used for our cooking class came directly from her garden. When we were ready to cook, we were greeted by her cousin, Made, who was there to help us monitor the cooking while Putu taught. We made five dishes in total: Nasi Sela (rice and sweet potato), Tempe Manis (sweet tempe), Perkedel Jagung (corn fritters), Satay Ayam (chicken satay with peanut sauce), and Urab (Balinese salad). We had a lot of fun during the process and learned so much about Balinese cuisine. At the end, we were proud to eat our creations, and they were all delicious. We even had some food left over, and Putu kindly provided takeout boxes for us to bring home. Overall, we really enjoyed this experience and loved the food. Putu, Made, and Pasta were all incredibly welcoming and exemplified great Balinese hospitality. We highly recommend this to anyone; it was one of our favorite experiences in Bali.

This private cooking class was perfect and smooth! First of all we were greeted at the pick up and presented to the traditional family house. After visiting the garden where all the produce comes from Mrs Putu harvested fresh mangosteen for us to try! She revealed us the secrets of Balinese cooking - all vegan as we requested. And under her professional guidance and help we prepared 5 - let me say delicious - dishes ! We also increased the spice level up to acceptable standards for us and ate food that was more delicious than what we had eaten in restaurants! We will remember not to leave out the kaffir lime leave - the star of the show ! Now we can retry these recipes back home and enjoy the delicious tempeh and tofu based dishes! It was a wonderful experience that we enjoyed a lot and we would like to send you again a big Terima kasih for opening your home and teaching us the secrets or the delicious Balinese cuisine! If you would still be doubting - do not hesitate - just quickiy book! Kim and Mitch from Belgium
