Grand Canyon National Park, located in northwestern Arizona, is the 15th site in the United States to have been named as a national park. The park's central feature is the Grand Canyon, a gorge of the Colorado River, which is often considered one of the Wonders of the World. The park, which covers 1,217,262 acres of unincorporated area in Coconino and Mohave counties, has received more than six million recreational visitors in 2017, which is the second highest count of visits in all American national parks after the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Grand Canyon was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979.
Grand Canyon South Rim
The Grand Canyon South Rim is located in the middle of the Grand Canyon. The terrain is steep and magnificent. The canyon is bottomless and the largest in terms of scale. The construction of the park is well done and perfect, especially suitable for self-driving on the road. There are no commercial facilities. Almost all viewpoints are kept as original as possible. Please get a detail itinerary before departure. So you are able to plan your own activities. The tour guide was not very forthcoming with information even when asked. I felt I was short changed as I was the only non mandarin speaker so didn't feel included or received the same amount of commentary provided in Mandarin. Thankfully the group members were helpful inspite of the language barrier. I should have been put with a group that had others who spoke English. The itinerary that was provided was different to what we had in terms of the days. The Antelope Canyon is only for those who wish to see the lower canyon. Otherwise it's a waist of your money and time as there is no alternate options provided to visit the upper canyon or take the boat ride from the lower canyon marina which were only 1.5 km from the lower canyon visitor centre. I was told by the tour guide that he will leave me behind if I was not on the bus by 9.30 am. However the group didn't return till after 10 am. I had to wait for the group to return from the lower canyon and there was nothing much I could do there. We didn't get to see lake Powell because the guide said the road was closed due to a funeral. We got 30 min at Glen dam and a glance of the lake. At the Horse shoe bend, we were given an hour. It was hot and it takes time to walk to and from the viewing platform. It's a place that is best to view as the sun is going down so the sun is not right in your face. It needs at least another 30 min. The entire trip felt like a marathon from the time we got off the bus. The rest stops were not long enough or frequent considering the long hours spent on the road. The bus was small not comfortable for a long road trip. Hot or cold drinks even with a lid were not allowed on the bus. Again considering the long hours spent on the bus they could have made provision to take on board a drink. There was a child who needed a toilet break they kept driving Inspite of the mother and child requesting for a stop. It was not very nice to watch the child asking and being told to wait or use a bottle. I have never experienced something like this and it was unsettling. The entire trip felt rushed and controlled and no room for flexibility. The focus was on selling the tours or events they had in offer. We didn't have enough time at any of the stops to experience the local culture or shop for souvenirs. If I had known that we would be back in Las Vegas by 5 pm the last day before returning to SF, I would have booked a performance and planned my evening. I have booked trips before on Viator and they have been good. This one was an exception and I will not be travelling with them again. The places that we visited were spectacular. It would be an amazing tour if only we got to spend more time at each site and options offered if we were not interested in the optional tours. We spent more time on the road. It was lot longer than what it said on the itinerary.
