What To Expect

Join us for an unforgettable glacier hike on Sólheimajökull, meaning ''Home of the Sun Glacier'', one of Iceland's famous natural wonders. Located on Iceland’s iconic South Coast, this adventure is for anyone who wants to touch real ice and see the wonders of a glacier firsthand. It is a perfect blend of easy exercise and breathtaking scenery. Your adventure begins at our base in the Sólheimajökull Parking Lot, about a 35-minute drive from the town of Vík. Here, you meet your friendly, certified glacier guide. After a safety briefing and gear-up, you’ll embark on a scenic walk toward the ice, passing a glacier lagoon where blue icebergs float beautifully in the water. Once we step onto the ice, you’ll discover a frozen world of towering ridges and deep blue formations. Our friendly local experts will be right beside you to ensure you feel safe and confident, while they bring the glacier to life with stories of the glacier - how it was formed, how it is changing, and why it is so special to Iceland. We keep our groups small for a more personal experience with plenty of time for questions, making this a top choice for families, couples, and solo travellers.

Simply magical, breathtaking, amazing experience with such incredible views. What a wonderful thing! I had 2 guides all for myself as nobody else booked the same time slot as I did, and it made the experience even better and so personal. Grazie amici miei!

A mazing experience! The guide was excellent , very knowledgeable, explained everything clearly, showed us so much, and taught us a lot along the way. If someone didn’t have proper footwear, it was possible to rent it on the spot, which was very convenient. Everything was well organized and truly impressive. Highly recommended; this is something you should experience at least once in your lifetime.

The tour with Josh was great! There were only three of us on the tour, which was very pleasant. Josh is an expert on Glacier (has studied it) and he has an enormous knowledge. When we return to Island, we will again book a tour with arctic adventure.

  • Great way to experience the glacier

We were staying in the south coast and wanted to build in a memorable adventure on the glacier that was active but not extreme. This hike was perfect for us. The person managing the hike, Neil from Catalonia, was great. He kept everyone moving, upbeat and safe. It may be useful for others to know that we were unsure which company to book and went with Arctic Adventures due to availability of the time slot we wanted. (10:30 instead of 9:30 which made a difference due to the late sunrise.) Whilst it was first cancelled due to weather, this wasn’t their fault and we were offered a refund or option to rebook. It was very easy to arrange the following day when the winds slowed down. Everything on the hike day went smoothly and was very well organised. Keep in mind it’s a bit of effort and you only spend maybe an hour or so on the ice itself, but it’s the only way to properly see the glacier. Our group was a pleasant size of 10 total. Some of the other operators had very large groups that arrived by coach and looked unpleasant.

Jan was absolutely AMAZING! He kept us safe, very informative. He was also a great photographer! Highly recommend! The hiking on ice part was honestly more fun than the cave itself. Dress in layers because it gets hot!

Such a fun experience. Our tour guide, Mickell, was wonderful. He took the time to ensure we all were familiar with the equipment. He provided great information about the glacier, how they are formed, what happens when they recede, melt, etc. and a general overview of glacier hiking. He hiked at a very good pace for everyone in the group and took plenty of breaks. He was charming and knowledgeable. Highly, highly recommend this adventure.
