What To Expect
Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
Come and see iconic works by, amongst others, Vincent van Gogh, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, Marlene Dumas, Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Gerrit Rietveld and Charley Toorop. The collection, organized thematically and in a loose chronology, emphasizes that art and design develop alongside social movements. Now on view: - Marina Abramovic: Mar 16 - Jul 14, 2024 The largest retrospective of her work ever held in the Netherlands! With the development of the prolific oeuvre of the pioneer of performance art. Please note this exhibition is NOT included in the entrance ticket!

4.00Erwin Olaf's retrospective was far too busy! As a result, you had to penetrate some rooms to see something!

5.00Beautiful retrospective of Erwin Olaf. You must have seen that. A beautiful time image of his reportage photography, his art photography, as well as an interview and a number of videos of beautiful still images. Also a room with his dance club photography in which you even get an impression of how he photographs when you are spoken to through a screen as if you were the next model to be photographed.

5.00I had a very nice time at this museum. I am not typically a huge fan of modern/contemporary art but I liked this quite a lot. The various exhibitions that were on were enjoyable and sometimes challenging, and I thought the museum did well to focus on a somewhat common theme (oppressed or less advantaged people pushing back against power) in many of the exhibits. I didn’t find it too crowded and was there for 2.5 hours or so which for me was the perfect length. Of particular note is the Drama 1882 showing that was on when I was there. This was definitely the highlight for me. The music was outstanding (as was everything else) and I very much enjoyed being able to hear it in the background in some of the rooms nearby as well. It created quite a cool vibe.
Unfortunately it turned out that museum was closed

1.00Too bad I only received a message 1 day before I was supposed to go that the museum was closed due to demonstration. Ticket was ordered. Tickets were no longer sold at all other museums days before October 5.

1.00Abundant collection but not great, in my view, with some exceptions. Note that despite the number of museum personnel at the entrance, you still cannot buy a ticket at the museum, you MUST buy online.
